Drilling a well by hand.
« on: October 07, 2019, 02:10:11 PM »
When I lived in the police state of New Jersey I practiced French Intensive Gardening. I had a 30X60 foot garden plus many flower gardens. My water bill was very high so I decided to sink a well even though it was illegal.
I started by using a post hole digger and dug to about 2 feet. I went to the plumbing supply and bought a 2ā€ well point, a 2ā€ cap, five couplings and four 5' well pipe. Well pipe and couplings are super thick so they can be hammered into the ground. I also bought a pump. Pressure gauge and the necessary parts to connect it to the well.
I connected the well point to a coupling then to a five foot pipe with a cap. Centering it in the hole I used a 16 pound sledge to drive it to where I could add another coupling and driving it in. When I got to fifteen feet I dropped a line down the pipe to see if I hit water, nope so I added another pipe. Now Iā€™m at twenty feet and I just got a little water so I went and bought a two foot piece of pipe, added it to the rest At twenty two feet I had plenty of water.
I then connected up the pump and ran an extension wire to the house and ran the pump until the water ran clear. Using water hoses and sprinklers I could water my whole yard without anyone knowing where the water came from.

In the winter I would disconnect the pump, drain it and put it away, I would also put the cap on the well opening.
At this depth you could use a hand pump if SHTF.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

That reminded me of the time when I was a child living down on the farm. My grandfather decided to drive a Well Point so we wouldn't have to walk all the way back to the house to get water for the animals. It was an auger type well point and they used a Tee bar to twist it into the ground. Me and my brother would sit on top of the Tee while they turned it. I'd sit there for a while and then swap out and my brother would sit on it. I think they ended up going down 30 or 40 feet. They removed the Tee and installed a hand pump.

I've pounded down a well point, and I've hand dug wells.  Both methods are dependent upon soil conditions and water table levels.  I don't think driving a point would work too well at my current AO... there's lots of sandstone and bedrock close to the surface.
