Cultivating Your Neighbors as Part of Your Prepping Plan
« on: December 30, 2012, 02:07:05 PM »
I started to post this on What have you done to prep today subject but felt it deserved it's separate subject line.

We all do a O-Kay to great job of prepping food, firearms, ammo and other important items; however it's also important to take the time to cultivate your neighbors. What I mean by that is to spend some time talking and working with your neighbors at your home and near your BOL.

In the beginning we were only on a 'waving relationship' with the farmer across the dirt road from our BOL. We even had a few choice words in the beginning of our relationship (And yes it is a relationship) over some pretty stupid things. From those tenacious moments years ago to a true friendship today it has been worth it.

Through in part due to our friendship with the farmer, we have grown our 'neighbor base' to the point where we know almost everyone on the mountain. Some folks we try to avoid as they are trouble and others we consider just extended family. For the most part we are all just trying to survive and it is a bit easier with the help of your neighbors. To have someone to ask help from or even better to give help when asked is a true blessing.

Here is an excellent example:

The farmer across the way sent me a text this past Thursday asking me to let him know when we were coming home from our holiday visit down south. So I sent him a text Friday night letting him know we would be home Saturday around 1:00PM.

We got back at the cabin at 3:00Pm as the snow made the trip home ugly. As I drove down our unploughed dirt road I was thinking about starting the wood stove in the cold cabin and where would I park the truck. As I inched my way down the road the road was plowed in front of my neighbor and my house. As I pulled pulled up to the cabin our parking area was plowed, there was smoke coming out of the chimney of the cabin and our deck was shoveled! WOW!

I helped my wife into the cabin which was a nice toasty 64 degrees! I immediately called my neighbor to thank him. He just told me that we were family and he didn't due anything more than what he would of for his family.

Here is a picture of my wife this morning after we came back from breakfast.

So cultivate those friendships with your neighbors. Who knows when you will need each other.  :))

What have you done to do the same...Share your stories...

That reminds me... This is my first "real" winter up north, due to last years record breaking warm weather here.  All this de-icing, shoveling and salting is already starting to getting old.  Hell, it takes 30 minutes to leave the house... but I guess all you yankees are used to it... go ahead and laugh.

Special-K where are you up north? Like Virginia North or Maine north?

We have 18" now and more still falling. It's 22 degrees and supposed to get down to zero on Wednesday. Snow showers Tues and Wednesday too. We are just in NE PA. Imagine what it is like in Watertown, NY or Bangor Maine.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

Cincinnati.  Anywhere above Georgia is north to me.  ^-^

Nah, it's not THAT bad here right now, but I've heard that it can get below zero with several feet of snow here.

EDIT:  According to google maps, there's approx. 100 miles difference in latitude between you and I.

And here I was thinking Santa Fe was 'Up North!"

Your lady looks like a blast JMac, from the eared hat to the wrap around smile what a picture. Now get that lumber under your porch stacked nice on some dunnage. :o

LOL TG. Yup the old lady is pretty much game for anything; heck she lived on a sailboat for 11 years!

You should see the lumber I have stacked in the cellar.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

We're close JM, just under 41 and a half here. Every year, this snow gets harder and harder to deal with.

Yeah hj I hear ya'. I need to find a scraper or plow hook up for my 9N tractor.

Hey, keep your ear open for a single or double bottom, 3 point hitch cultivating plow in your area. A 12" one would be perfect!

8N Ford Plowing With Two Bottom Plow

New ones run $600- while used ones are in the $100-$200- range. I know that TG is not a big fan of deep soil plowing; however I have to break up this soil before I can work on my shallow plowing or disking this spring. I am limiting my trek to PA, NJ, CT and southern NY.

Thanks...

You're gonna agree when that plow hits a rock, snaps the share and throws the pole at your head ;)

TG, LMFAO!

Hey, you have an open invitation to come on by ANYTIME to give me some input. I would appreciate it!

A rib roast and any adult beverage is on me. That goes for Tgrl too.  :))

I would love the opportunity, thanks for the invite.

We might have to make time when we are in your neck of the woods.
