cyclic hydroponic fish farming and gardening
« on: April 30, 2012, 03:49:58 PM »
ok guys, over the next several weeks I'm going to be creating a new photodocumentary and write-up similar to my DIY rainwater write-up except this should be far more in depth. this is going to be the real deal. 100% self-perpetuating, self-contained hydroponic vegetable garden and catfish farm. once it's all set up, the only thing that it will need to sustain itself is for the fish to be fed, and we're already talking about planting some stuff for the fish to eat, 100% self-sustainable.

you may recall the family from the first doomsday preppers show that had a similar set-up.
Dennis McClung and Family from 2012Supplies.com on Doomsday Preppers

it won't be anywhere near the size and complexity of that set-up, but it's going to be the same general idea on a smaller scale.

no, it's not my project, it's something that a very close friend of mine is doing, but I'm going to be documenting the process, and probably helping him with some of the work.

when it's all said and done, I'll scrap this thread and create a new one, I just wanted to give you guys a heads-up and let you know I've got something AWESOME in the works for you guys.  [url=http://www.freesmileys.or

Can't wait RS for your info on this. I too, thought the couple on DD Preppers program had a great set-up. Although I can't imagine eating that much fish everyday as what was portrayed. Plus his location was terrible, middle of a subdivision in Phoenix (I think).

I am more interested in the produce. Protein can be sold, bartered to traded in ROL but come WROL.... Eating fish will become a pretty trivial thing.

well like I said, this project won't be anywhere near the size and scope of the one from doomsday preppers, but I posted the video to show the general idea.

basically here's the progress so far. dug the pond and built up a concrete wall about 3' above ground, 8' deep. about 15'x8'. pond liner installed. there will be a big raised bed style hydroponic garden a few feet above the pond and a solar powered UNFILTERED pump at the bottom of the pond to pump the water and fish shit up into the garden. the garden will have a limit switch that will release and drain back down into the pond once the garden fills up with water. all electric components are solar.

(on a side note. these same friends are also amateur bee keepers, and the bees are PISSED about the pond for some reason. they're usually pretty tame but when you hang around the pond they swarm you, lol. we don't know what there problem is)

Pretty clever defense system if you ask me. Trained attack bee's, totally brilliant!  ;D
