Title: Time to get New Glasses
Post by: JohnyMac on March 21, 2018, 10:32:08 AM
I have a eye exam coming up in a week or two $o I am $ure new eye gla$$e$ will be in my future.

Typically I buy a new pair for inside and another pair for outside, ala sunglasses. This year my plan is to keep my inside glasses and just replace the lenses. I have done this for years with my Rayban Wayfarers however, based on my frames condition I will probably go for a new complete pair of sun glasses. Hence this post.

I am thinking of 86ing the Rayban's and going with a ballistic pair of sunglasses. Looking at Wiley X Brick Prescription (https://www.framesdirect.com/Wiley-X-Sun-Prescription-prescsgp/rxsgp-lamirj-s-l-k-k-tcqdoc.html) in either gray/black or green lenses but at $527-, the price took me back a bit.

Before I jump in and buy a half a grand worth of eye wear, I thought I would ask this illustrious group their thoughts on buying ballistic eye wear, Wiley, and any other suggestions.

Johny

Wiley makes excellent glasses. They are expensive, but very nice.  Also take a look at Smith Elite line. I have a set of ballistics from them that have been fantastic and were about $300 if I remember correctly.

+1 on the Smiths

https://www.smithoptics.com/us/elite (https://www.smithoptics.com/us/elite) (I like the pivlock) as they are very slim and fit under earpro without digging into my head and giving me a giant headache (echo or echo max style) does not work for everyone so would recommend trying to find a place you could try them on before you buy.

Also hear great things on the Wiley

Thx gents for your input.

The thing that drives up the cost of my glasses is that I need prescription and add insult to injury  I need bifocals.  :'(

Wiley must know I have been lurking as they just sent me a 50% off lenses coupon.  Maybe I can preorder and send in my new prescription once I get in in two weeks or so.

Anyone ever tried a place like this--  https://www.39dollarglasses.com/ (https://www.39dollarglasses.com/)

The Leonardo model in the Gunmetal color is my standard frame.  But I have never purchased from them.

Nemo they say lens's are free but you have yo add $80.00 for bifocals. I wear aviator glasses and I also need new ones. My only question is how do you fit them to your face/head like brick&mortar stores do?

Yes. And I know a bunch of people who use this company or others on the interwiz.

The glasses sold here do not meet my needs of: Prescription, ballistic (not bullet proof of course just splatter proof), anti fog, and available with progressive bifocals.

They say prescription lenses are available and can do single vision, reading, and bifocals ($80 more) and have a page to input your script numbers.

Single vision script in the frames noted above are $39.  Even wal mart charges me about $120 for that.  I might have to live dangerous and give them a try.

The progressives charge out at $203 figuring in varilux and glare stuff.  Wife and Doc says I should go with them anyway.

No local place I have tried can do those for under about $375.
