Title: Target Indicators
Post by: Jackalope on August 01, 2018, 04:15:18 PM
Here's an article regarding target indicators (otherwise known as avoid putting a bullseye on your back): http://www.deftsystems.us/2018/07/31/non-visual-target-indicators/ (http://www.deftsystems.us/2018/07/31/non-visual-target-indicators/)   I've noticed that clothes and hair are pungent from campfire smoke while camping.  It could definitely be a problem when attempting to survive on a long term basis.

I learned this many years ago when I was a hunter. Learned most from the book "The Tracker" by Tom Brown. A fantastic read, he could sneak up to a deer and pet it, he was that good.

Its a good write up.

Allow me to add.
Studies have shown the human eye is attracted to "colors" off from the environment (duh)
Most of us carry AR15s.

In their most common "color" they have  Black Stick effect and this attract the eye.

Two of my ARs are

a) fully camoed up or
b) I have simply made the points in having upper, lower, stock, rail, VFG, etc etc in contrasting shades.. a mix mostly of FDE and the "factory "charcoal..

Most of my magazines are either painted camo or in a non charcoal color from the factory. (usually olive drab or FDE), I dont have any studies to back this up but it seems plausible to me that a black banana under the "stick" might also be a distinctive indicator.

Both of these are much harder to spot when I lay them on the ground.
..even when I am close I noticed that it sometimes takes me a little extra focus to locate my rifle in the bushes befor heading down the lane when its my turn especially if its the fully camoed one.
The "Mixed trim" one has a similar effect albeit not as pronounced but still a noticeable difference in "noticibility" to my "stock" rifles.

And at night when laid against a bush they become near invisible ironically the dark stock "color" does not.
I have also oberserved this difference with NVGs

My advice is, as a minimum, to have a roll of camo tape handy for when "the balloon goes up".
Most might not like to "vandalize" their beautiful rifle with tape in peacetime... but it may be quite useful when its "on".

I've attached a pic of a rifle with mixed "colors" of components... this is an easy way to break up the black stick profile w/o attaching scrimmage, camo tape or going an expensive hydrodipping route.

Interesting discussion. I have always wanted to camo my AR but have not gotten around to it.

Nice looking AR Eric and I think I’ll take Nemo’s advice and get some Krylon.
I have been noticing the color shift in cars on the highway and I noticed black, red and white stand out at distances where flat silver, gray  and green not so much with faded gray being harder to spot than the others.
At long distances they all look like a black dot to me.  On a sunny day the red and white really stand out. The faded gray on your rifle almost disappears, the other colors over power it especially the black.
Why then did the military have their rifles black?

Krylon is indeed a good way to do it.
I also have a kryloned rifle but not sure if i have a pic handy.
The colors on the rifle are actually: Olive drab (a grayish green), FDE ( a tan) and charcoal).
I did it in this case because i wanted a rifle with a broken up silhouette but w/o painting or taping it.

The .mil had dark rifles because of the phosphate coating on metal parts which was charcoal.

    Here's a follow-up article about target indicators, and spray painting: http://www.deftsystems.us/2018/08/14/spray-painting-things/ (http://www.deftsystems.us/2018/08/14/spray-painting-things/)

Ouch.  Methinks I need a spray can or 3.
