Title: Redoing the SKS
Post by: hjmoosejaw on February 18, 2012, 02:14:46 PM
I'm thinking of rebuilding my SKS. I thought of something like the Tapco T6, then I saw a bullpup version. Does anybody have any experience with either and have any advice or input?

Hello all, RON L here

I have to side with Mountain on this one, Sks as it is is a good Carbine capable of good operation and servce, most folks screw them up as he has said trying to make them into an AK, Siminov who designed it never intened that and many times it ruins a pertectly good carbine? By the time ya add all that STUFF you could have bough an AK anyhow $ wise!

Not being an expert on either gun,the AK or the SKS. I'm not sure what you mean by making the SKS into an AK. Right now my SKS is a regular rifle that has had a synthetic stock (folding) put on it. I could just keep it like that but was considering rails for a light, a pistol grip forearm or whatever. Of course the bullpup option would change it dramatically. But what would adding to it a little do. Like I say, I must be missing something here. Your help would be appreciated.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

An SKS is what it is, its not an AK its not a subgun its not an AR

Its a 10 round magazine fed 7.62x39 rifle.

Use it as such.

Just my opinion take it how ever you please.

Ak stuff aside, I say just consider how any mods might affect your shooting style. If you feel a pistol grip, telescoping stock, etc. would help than I'd go for it. It's not like you can't buy extended magazines for it  ::) and hell if you're sentimental like me with your guns it might be tough to let go of.  :'( Walther......

Just a note on the legal aspect of it before I tell you what I think. If you put a pistol grip on an sks it will have to be 922r compliant. With that out of the way the sks was designed the way it was because it was the best way for that weapon to opperate. 10 round mag to use stripper clips, if it aint broke dont fix it.

LOL! Yeah.  But you said it in Floridian.  He interpreted it into Georgian.  LOL!    :)

Sounds like good advice. I do have a 30 round fixed mag that I put on some time back. But I guess I'll leave it alone. I've always believed in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it " thing anyway.

What about the 922r compliancy thing? I just read up on it some. From what I just read, there are 17 regulated parts on an SKS. So if you are allowed no more than 10 imported parts on a list of 20, isn't the gun itself already over its limit? Or is that just new parts of which I'm allowed 10 ? (if they're imported) And if they are made in america, I'm okay? Damn ATF! Not sure I get it.

I don't have a problem with anyone tinkering with their own guns to make them more useful for the owner. Personally, I think the standard issue SKS is b8ttf8ck-ugly. The guy in the video did a good job with it and if he likes it, it shots well, and learned some more skills in the process, then more power to him.

sks was one of my first guns many years ago practice with the stripper clips and you'll become an efficient machine, best if left alone just my .02

The sks is like the saiga's they dont have a pistol grip so they are a sporting gun, 922r compliance is a pain in the ass but it's the law. Its all about what the ATF thinks are evil parts and its a pain bringing a sks into compliance

Reaver: yeah sorry man you did say that but when it comes to the sks the point cant be said enough.

Why stick with a 10rd mag when incredibly reliable 20rd mags are available?
you can still load a 20rd mag with stripper clips with very little modification to the mag.

why does everyone get butthurt when it comes to modifying the SKS?
what's wrong with a semi-auto carbine with a 20rd capacity?

YOU GUYS ARENT MAKING ANY SENSE!!!!

Hey I'm not saying DON'T do it.

I'm just saying that its pretty proven that when you fuck with perfection shit becomes un-perfect.

If you had one of those nifty 20 round fixed SKS magazines. That would be awesome and completely doable. The detachable ones are when you start messing stuff up.

I had a fixed chinese 20rd for awhile, but it wouldn't fit my girlfriend's paratrooper SKS at all so i got rid of it.  :'(
The springs in those mags are seriously small, same size as the 10rd mags, i didn't like it.

The tapco detachable mags can be used as a fixed mag simply by filing a small notch in the rear for stripper clip use(used fixed mag lips as pattern) it works fantastically, i know, i've seen me do it.

Then again i see what you are saying, i've never tried to use the "detachable" aspect of those mags because of the bolt hold open, super-awkward mag release, and those stupid "duck bills".  I simply use the tapco mag as a fixed 20 rounder and feed it with stripper clips, works great, zero hiccups.

leave it as a nondetachable mag thats what it was made for

when i see guys trying to put pistol grips and detach mags on these guns i cant help but wonder why the fuck they dont just buy an ak47.......

As for myself, I was only considering dressing mine up a little for something to do. But after reading a bunch of these replies. I'll probably leave it the way it is. Synthetic (folding stock) with a 30 round fixed mag. Might throw on a red dot or something, I don't know. I have considered an AK to build on, but eventually I figure on the Sig 516.

man if you want an ar15 dont go with a sig

they really arent very good for the money, and you can do sooooo much better than sig ar's

I think TG suggested LMT and I've heard good things about Rock River and Bushmaster. I'll have to look into the others. I'm a novice and here to learn. So all suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, what's wrong with the Sig 516?

Build your own. That's what I and TG did. You learn your weapon and get what you want and not what happens to be on the rifle
