Is this a good 'First AK'?
« on: August 14, 2012, 10:32:19 PM »
This guy is asking $575 for a Romanian AKM built on a nds reciever with a new barrel. My knowledge is all on ARs. Would this be a good AK to just 'have'?

If its a straight build, has all 922r compliance parts, and the barrel isnt shot out its about par for the course on price. lol I remember when those kits were under $100 with the original chrome lined barrels!

MAKE SURE that front sight is not canted that is the problem with some of these builders who slap things together trust me that is annoying as hell to correct on your own  also, make sure the gas port isn't canted and make sure that the mag well is not too loose because that is annoying also.

For the price, you'd almost be better off buying something new from a place like Centerfire Systems. Then at least if something is wrong or doesn't work, you have options for getting one that does. Some of the new Yugo AK's made by Zastava from Century look pretty nice. Would be a little more expensive after transfer and shipping.

One of the things that led me to buy an AR is that it's too hard to tell what is and what isn't a good AK.

Look around on the interwebz and you will find a whole host of pages that will show you what to look for when inspecting an AK.

This is a manditory step. You can pull a good one out of a pile of cheap ones or a bad one out of a pile of good ones.

If you are on a budget and are handy with a few common tools or have a buddy that is, you can't go wrong with the Russian made Saigas. Barrels are chrome lined and the conversion is really easy. The biggest annoyance is no bullet guide but they can be had inexpensively.  All you need is a power drill or drill press is even better, dremal tool, and files. A mig or tig welder is great too if you have access to one but not required. On the parts side, trigger group such as tapco and a stock set is all that is needed for a basic conversion.
