Well MNT, I've always been kind of partial to the badass old school M1A, but I also have a huge hardon for the socom 16 from an assault standpoint.   :)

From what I understand, the SOCOM is louder, and if you're looking for the one of the two that is best capable of hitting targets at a distance, the full size is for you. However, you already know this stuff. Why are you asking? Personally, if there had been a Scout/Squad M1A available when I went looking for mine, I probably would have bought that one. 18" barrel, but they didn't have to redesign the gas system like they did for the SOCOM.

People Eater, you own a SOCOM (or did, depending if you sold it or not). Can you think of any other major differences?

Mountain, why are you buying it, again?

If I ever get another M1A it'll be another Socom 16

The thing is a lot lighter, more handy. I can comfortably clear a house with that thing.
The only problem is I wouldn't want to fire it in doors. She's not bad out side, as long as you don't have a roof above your head. If your in a place where it can echo your going to have your bell rang for quite a while unless you have ear pro on.

If this is a troll thread. Fuck you.

Hello all, RON L here

I find myself at odds for how to respond to this post?? I'cve not owned any of the Socom or other Modified gas System M-1A/M-14 Cloes, But I've always heard of issues with some of the Changes to the Gas Systen? IN terms of Reliability and all, and Longgevity, I'd have to Defer to the Regulat M-1A, and Pass on a Socom, but thats not really a informed responce, as I don't have personal experience withthe Socom to say and have to go just on what I have heard a while back?> Pretty poor way to make a Judgment!!!! I'd say, the Full size is a Known Quantity, while I'd have to research the Socom changes befrore I plunked $ down and be safe?

If it were my money I would go with a full length M-1A.
Why shoot a 7.62 out of a short barrel?

If ya cant handle the weight on a standard rack grade M1a, go back to 223 or 762x39, or some other girlie caliber.

The longer the barrel, the faster the bullet, the flatter it shoots.

My MBR is a M1 Garand, 30-06, 8 shot clip (enbloc) and 1000 yard shots with the NM sights and other parts on it.

ALso tactically all that flame out of the barrel from unburnt powder is gonna light you up like a Christmas tree. Smith Enterprise's vortex flassh hider is your friend.

When its 1 on 30 Flame & Sound is a +
It is rather scary to be on the other end of a very loud very bright weapon. Makes you think " I wonder how much cover I'm going to need to not feel the impact of that thing "
Its all in the mind tricks bro.

Easy, fullsize.... If I want something shorter I'd grab a carbine not a battle rifle. Rah have you even shot your M1a yet? I remember you had'nt shot it last time we spoke

If your out in the boonies and i think you are id say full size bro. Your gonna get some real nice range with it. and it will prolly stand up to more abuse than most off the rack ARs.
Good whiskey, makes Jack Rabbit smack da bear.

Yes, I have! I love, love, love, love it. Feels great when I shoot it. Of course, that was this past December (still don't have a job, still in school full time and watching my daughter). Depending on what my school does in the next couple of months, I may have to give it up for a while and get a decent job. Then I will have the time and money for training.

I would definitely check the velocity of 16" vs standard length bbl.  My understanding is that the 16" has quite a drop-off and that the 18" Scout Squad really gives a lot for those two inches.  (The amount of powder burned earlier in the bbl is much greater)

I would definitely look into the Scout Squad if you want a general purpose rifle, where as the SOCOM would be limited to CQB and the standard is so god awful long.

If it were me, I'd go with the full length. The whole point of running an m1 is to have a long arm. Don't hinder it trying to be all new school tacticool.

Hello all

ROn L here

I'd Repeat that I'd Look at what effect the gas System Mods have made to the Rfile's function, But Yes, the More Important thing of Function, as well would be how much FPS youir dropping? ? They make carbines for a reason??? Not sure I would go SoCom or shorted than M-1A for those reason?
