Title: Do I realy need a 12 gauge?
Post by: Kobalt on September 01, 2011, 02:12:49 PM
I have a 20 gauge singel shot and am not sure if I could handel a 12 gauge pump. Would a 20 gauge massberg 500 be good enough for home defence?

my shotgun is the last thing i would use for HD...i use my m4..i dont want a round or ball bearing going threw the wall and hitting my kid.....that being said if you want a shotgun. i prefer 12 gauge. they have alot more meat to them. its alot  more power, but i take that as a good thing [url=http://www.freesmileys.or ....GO MERICA !!!!!

IMO the gauge of the shell is much less important than mag capacity. that single shot BS aint gonna cut it. I'd much rather have a 20g. with a tube magazine than a 10g single shot.

5ft 10in 205 pounds. And this is not about single shot it is about which pump I should chose.

there's no such thing as a "single shot pump". the pump on a shotgun is just a mechanism for ejecting the spent shell and pulling the next one from the magazine. someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, because this thread is throwing me off a little.

ughh... you're right, I read it wrong from the beginning.

well, to answer your question, given your height and weight, you should be able to handle 12g just fine. I'm 5'10" 170 and I'll rock 00Buck all day. and given the choice between the two, I'd definitely choose 12. just my .02

I was shooting a 12 gauge at 6 years old. Nut the fuck up and deal with it. A 12 Gauge is A mandatory must have for a WROL inventory.

I would say that you NEED a 12 gauge. It doesn't have to be fancy or anything, but it is the most common shotgun, meaning it will have the most ammo available for it. Plus the power and devastation of a 12g is undeniable. I personally choose the remington 870's. Other shotguns work well too, but I prefer the 870.

I haven't bought 20 gauge ammo in a long time so I could be mistaken, but I believe 12 gauge ammo is cheaper and more readily available and everyone and there brother has one. 12 has a larger variety of ammo choices and after market accessories and I don't think I've ever seen any less lethal 20 gauge loads. I'm 6ft, 165lbs and have no problem with the recoil.

Damn, I wish I was as tough as some of you guys.  I've got an aluminum 12 ga.  pump and I keep a lazy boy recliner strapped to the end of the stock in a lame effort to tame it down.  After about 12 rounds of 8 pellet I'm ready to switch to a pellet gun and send them down range one pellet at a time.

hah, yea man the jury has spoken. just a word of advice: don't get caught up in make and model... IMO anything with a reputation will serve you just fine.

and (i almost hate to do this) if you're working on a really cheap budget. New England Firearms Pardner Pump.... i had one for a while until I got my 870. under $200 for an identical Rem870 knockoff/clone. to tell you the truth, I had more trouble breaking in my 870 than i had with that little pardner pump.

most of the standard ones seem to run between $350-$450

says one observer*

in my experience with 870's the slide can get very sticky trying to extract the spent cases. some times to the point where you have to stop what your doing and give it all youve got to get that slide to move. it happens with cheap ammo alot... and to back up my claim with some referances of others heres one of many videos reporting the same issue... like the video says... the guns aint what they use to be...remmingtons quality is down for sure. so an older version 870 might be just fine.

I've had that problem but only with the cheapest BS shells I could find. never had it happen with any buckshot. but you are absolutely right though... I've heard of sticking some fine steel wool onto a bore brush, sticking the cleaning rod into a power drill and going to town on the chamber. never done it though.

If I may quote myself....

I did say " Wingmaster " didn't I?

When is the last time they made a Wingmaster?

I have put over 1K in the cheapest ammo you can get. IN ONE DAY!
And it was a non issue.

As for claiming to be an AK guy to shrug off the use of 12 gauge is completely ignorant. & I think that you should expand your  mind a little bit. It may save your life.

I just don't think the expresses have the quality of old wingmasters

They only way I would get another shotgun ( that isn't a gift )
would be like a supermag or something of that nature. Something that would allow me to fire 3 & 1/2 inch
this way it just expands my ammo availability.

I like my mossy 12 g. But its a field rifle. meaning it has a longer barrel and a nasty reach. its hard to take it to the range, it blows holes in targets even at 25 yards. But I dont really ever see myself using it for HD. I would go to my Tuarus revolver or AK. My wife is too small for the mossy, so we prefer the others. been thinking about cutting it down to legal for about 40 bucks. But other than that, I have no use for it. im no bird hunter. it is a fun piece of machinery though.

Hello all, RON L here

Hm,m, Yes, I have to agree witthe weight/Weight supplied a 12GA should be no issue to handle! I see 20 Ga as a Good round as well, but the varied amount of low Brass 12Ga make 20 gage less then needed in my opuinion! I will alos agree that a single shot, while a nice hunting item, for some,, for Home Defence, I wee a Pump or Semi-Auto as Preferable with the Pump bing better for many! I see a 12Ga or any shot gun as sort of a "Swiss Army Knife" Of Fireams with Slugs and Buckshot, a real stopped and good fot heavy game and Self Defence and a swop of a ligher shot and sometimes barrel and your ready for light game or birds? Hard to beat i many other firearms selected! Lots to consider, and if it were me, Find a Pal, someone ya trust who owns a 12 and say I'll buy the shells lets try your, Betting you will be out the door to a Fav place to shoot before ya know what hit ya?

5ft 10in 205 pounds. And this is not about single shot it is about which pump I should chose.

I am 6'2 240lb and my mossberg 590 beats the shit out of me. I am going to upgrade my stock to a shock absorbing one the first chance i get. I personally like 20ga but you may want to look at the rem model 870 12 ga first befor making a decision. he police depts have trained all sizes and body types on that platform with a fair amount of success. Good hunting

12 gauge is an all around great shell. So many different types of ammo, so many uses, you should have TWO 12ga shotguns ;D

I own a Remington 870 express magnum and it's my hunting shotgun however my wife loves her mossberg 500 tactical persuader that's been modified slightly with a fore grip, she's about 5'4, not heavy at all and the first day she had it she put 125 shells through it.
The point is it doesn't matter how big or small you are because you can change things about a shotgun to make it friendlier to you such as a butt pad, low recoil shells, and an assortment of stocks to choose from.

Hello all, RON L here

Al Good Points made here folks? I agre with Sledge and Treadonmenot, as If you pick a workable design, REMY, MOSSY what ever is not as Important as the right shell selection so that you can handle the recoil and pattern? I see it as a "Swiss Army Knife" of Firearms and while Yes, I like my AK, AR and others, I see the shotgun as having so many abilities, so easy to obtain, ammo will always be found no matter where ya are? Lots going for it and you can test different ammo to see what works for you performance wise as well as recoil and other factors? I also apluade the idea of buying used? I've sen many an Older shotgun languishing in a pawn shop or used rack of a Gun shop and can be had for 1/3RD what a New one would cost and layaway makes it even more possible!! I'd Prefer a Benilli, but I have an Old Remy Express? Go wit what ya have or can get and can affoard? Not a deal if you can't spare the cash for it?

Since it fits in with this thread I might as well post it.  Just bought a winchester defender new-in-the-box for 300 bucks (321 after tax).  What I like about it is the very spongy rubber recoil pad and 2 places designed to put sling swivels on.  The piece itself is all black, 18" barrel, and holds 5 + 1 shells of 12-guage.  Can't wait to take it to the range next weekend... Only problem with a 20ga is finding decent defensive ammo. It is hard to come by. If your over 200pd you can run a 12ga. When women would still talk to me I has a gf who could easily fire .OOO buck from my M1 and she went about 105 dripping wet.

So the question isn't "do I need a shotgun" but does it need to be a 12 gauge vs 20.

As stated - the biggest issue with 20 gauge is a reliable supply of the right ammo.  Bad guy isn't going to notice what you shoot him with.

The most important thing with shotguns is technique though and shooting a 12 isn't that much worse than a 20 if you know what you are doing.  My mom shot skeet with a 12 for many years and my wife will sun a load or two though mine no problem.
