Community Battle Dress
« on: August 29, 2011, 10:44:02 PM »

I came across this picture completely by accident. It shows several Koreans on the rooftop of a business armed with rifles during the Rodney King Riots. I thought the white headbands were just an easy way to tell friend from foe, but it turns out to be much deeper. The tradition started in Japan. The white headband was sown with the written prayers of 100 people. Whenever worn, the soldier knew 100 people were awaiting his safe return.

So, I guess it's their version of the Gadsden Flag. I thought it was pretty cool.

honestly man, there's not going to be any way to tell... sure we may be able to organize some little call sign or symbol or something here on this site, but what are the odds that any of us are actually going to just randomly bump into each other post-SHTF? it's going to come down to your own judgment.

I think it' safe to say that the Gadsden flag is the most widely recognized patriot associated image. So I'd go for that, you can start by making armbands like they did during WWII to signify friendly forces during confusing operations. they also used them during the Vietnam protests to show opposition. If you are in a more formal setting you can wear lighter blue colored tie which has been the symbol for libertarianism since the early 1900's anyone over the age of 50 will definitely pick up on that.

Because I doubt that discussing a secret handshake or gang sign amongst ourselves will achieve anything because the chances of Kentactic and I running into each other post collapse is then a snowballs chance in hell.

Although your always welcome! :D

thats good to be thinking like that... i expressed some interest in setting up a long distance network or some sort of radio contact...but i dont know enough about it..some guys cant afford it and i didnt get alot of posotive feedback from others interested. but aslong as we keep throwing shit at the wall eventually some of it will stick.

Once you've got a tribe, team, or cell, you're going to need to know how to identify friend from foe during missions, or when just sitting around a base camp.

I posted this over on LNL and it go way off course and off-topic.

Also, there is no way to do this before SHTF, unless you already have your group together.  There is no way to tell friend from foe in WROL, but if I do see a guy has a Gadsden patch, I probably won't just shoot him outright.

Here is an article about choosing a symbol to wear all the time in SHTF with your tribe or cell.  Some can even been seen at night, which carries another huge advantage and DISADVANTAGE, should your camp get attacked and you have security guys, running back into your base to fight off the attackers.  You don't want to shoot your own guy in the fog of war as he is rushing back to help you defend the camp.

Also, if you choose something that can be seen by night vision, I would darn sure be certain my enemy did not have night vision or you are just painting yourself as one huge target.

Much more here at the link:  http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/2010/09/praxis-iff-identification-friend-or-foe.html

Quote

Improvised white strips of cloth tied around an attacker's arm have been used for centuries to help soldiers identify friend from foe in night attacks.

Today's military of course have sophisticated Blue Force Tracker electronics to keep track of friendlies, but modern versions of "Mad Anthony's" hats with white paper in them can be found in the "cat's eyes" helmet cover band.

IR & UV cyalume sticks, with or without a holder, can be used at night and seen only by people with night vision devices. It would be a mistake in today's environment to believe that only your side has such devices.

But IFF can be even simpler. Beginning in the early 90s the Crips street gang wore British Knights shoes and took the "BK" logo to indicate "Blood Killer," in reference to the rival gang.

Shoes as identifiers remain popular today with the rival Mexican drug gangs. See this Texas Rangers' PDF analysis of a cartel vs. cartel vs Mexican Army shootout in Nuevo Laredo on 16 July 2010.

Go to Page Six for the photo:

"Many of the subjects appear to have the identical brand/model of shoes, or the same color schemes. This may be an indicator for friendly forces recognition, particularly during surveillance."

Figure it out, make up your own, and make sure that everyone in your tribe or cell has them.  When the fog of war starts and SHTF, you'll be glad you didn't shoot someone who is on your side, and he/she will also equally be just as happy you didn't.

Actually,it's kinda hard to come up with just one single way to tell friend from foe when you factor in all the possible senario's you can get into.

This, more than anything else, is exactly why it is SO important to establish communication prior to SHTF/WROL with other preppers in your area.  Network and get f2f with each other.  Establish post SHTF communication guidelines.  Train and socialize with each other.  Establish a "community" in your area.  Bottom line, ANYONE you are not currently organized with is a potential threat until you are able to confirm otherwize.

This poses an obvious problem: how do you (or your group) respond to contact with others?

Me?  I'll be cautiously optomistic in my initial contacts with an individual or group who is appearing to be peaceful and I would expect the same from them if they are so....but I sure as hell will have several guys in the background covering my ass if if my optomism was misplaced.
