Buying a Mosin Nagant

I'm gonna buy a Mosin Nagant in a month or two and I'm looking for info that will help me buy a good one. So to you Mosin owners I need your help on any info would be great.

I would spend the extra to get a Finnish m39. Better stock, a lot better accuracy generally. Still are fairly available. Southern Ohio Guns has them for still decent prices. Btw, most all Finns are hex receivers. If it has round, then it's a fairly rare bird. This site is a good place too, but her stock rotates, so check back regularly for better deals....

The Russian ones seem to be more "ammo finicky" so you have to find a bullet weight and brand it likes.  Mine likes the heavyweight 182-grain fmj boattail.  I got a lot of gunsmithing done to mine and now it is 1moa on an average day and sub-moa on a good day.  A caliber of that potential range deserves optics, also.  I go with standard 3 x 9 mil-dot with 40mm eye relief.  It's a standard scope and most military sniper manuals are measured with that scope in mind.  The 7.62 x 54r is ballistically a solid choice.  The smokepole package can get you out to 500 yards or more if you do your math correctly.

I checked out a gun shop and they had a 1940 Mosin going for $90, Hex receiver, bolt is a little sticky but I can fix it, don't know whats the manufacturer, and in a few weeks its going into my hands after looking for weeks I've found one and thanks for the info ciao  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

UPDATE now for those who read the topic I have just bought a different Mosin at a better price. Now its a round receiver, made in 1942, its a Ishevesk don't the spelling is right and I bought it for $85 plus $5 sales tax and it came with bayonet and tools, sling, oil can and ammo pouch. Congrats Alex. Unless you start hardcore MN collecting, receiver shape makes no difference. Both variations are built like tanks.

be sure to inspect the crown closely. check for wear or erosion at the end of the rifling.
