Bought a new Weapon
« on: August 24, 2012, 05:34:27 PM »
Drove to Nashville today and got a steal price on a Colt 1911.

I got it off the original owner who had had it since the 70s. I am 99% sure he never cleaned it since he owned it. He didn't even know how to field stip it and the bore is super dark from what I assume is 40 year old carbon. He said he only shot it a few times. There are a few rust spots on her that I will have to treat but still at $550 I'm not complaining. Next will be to get a solid barrel bushing for it, deblue and derust it, and parkerize it for my new primary shooter.

I also got to stop at a really cool gun store today called the Outpost Armory. There prices didn't really blow me away but their selection and staff were amazing. I did get a big can of CLP for $8 though. And I got another dose of discrimination. Dam my age (I'm 20 by the way). I asked to see the price on some of the Hornady 75 grain hpbt behind the counter. The elderly clerk eyed me suspiciously and asked, 'Ammunition or bullets?' It must be a rule that you have to be over 40 to reload.. anyway I got a kick out of it.

UPDATE:

Ok I finally got the stiff collet bushing off with a brass punch. I looked inside the spring plug ant there were litterally cobwebs in them. There isn't a single idiot scratch on this weapon. It was field stripped for the first time in its life about 10 minutes ago. The dark bores cleaned up suprisingly nicely. I can't tell if it's pitting or just old carbon stuck in the crevices. Either way it's minimal.

Damn nice 1991 there Grudgie. It is a testament to the design that they still work, despite years of neglect.
