Serious Medical Prepping: Maintenance Meds, Part 1
« on: February 21, 2019, 03:29:17 PM »
Good ideas for anyone who has team members (or perhaps yourself) who require "maintenance medication".

Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

Link won't work for me.  Not unusual though.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

God created Man, Col. Sam Colt made him equal, John Moses Browning turned equality to perfection, Gaston Glock turned perfection into plastic fantastic junk.

Patriotman

It is a very good article that needs more attention. I feel that medical subjects get left to the side to often.  For instance, lots of people get some form of firearms training....making holes, but very few people get any basic medical training. Guess which one we are more likely to use.  I am not sure if it is a subconscious thing because it makes us see hoe fragile or mortal we as human being are and it make people uncomfortable.

This article was a good interesting look at supplying for medical supplies. I honestly thought that I was fairly well set up medically but some aspects of this article made me rethink some of my supplies. This is from the longer term view that we dont think about as much.  I can stop a bleed, treat the patient but i will be strained by the need to change dressings for an extended period or if there are multiple patients.  There is always a balance to trying to supply for this....I am not trying to be a med center for the surrounding area, but could definitely use some time looking at what I do have and making sure they are robust enough.

I have to take a maintenance med so that part was close to my concerns. I have a 4 month supply of my maintenance med and have a significant supply of OTC pain/cold&flu meds as well as 3 courses of 2 different antibiotics. I currently have a dozen 1000ml IV solutions (8 Sodium, 4 Lactated Ringers) 2 Dextrose IVs as well as a bagfull of IV kits and a bagful of sealed suture kits.

Thanks for posting....really got me thinking on this subject

Regarding purchasing meds from foreign suppliers, we've had reasonably good luck.  My wife takes Synthroid on a daily basis, and we've been able to build up a long term supply at a reasonable cost.  The meds are exactly the same as the ones she's been purchasing at our local pharmacy.  If you're going to go the route of a foreign supplier, it's best check the meds out now, while one can still obtain FDA approved medicine.  Try to get references for the supplier too, if possible.  We're also exploring natural alternatives too.

My wife takes seizure meds daily and that is definitely a hole I have in my medical preps. My long term “nursing” care supplies is what I am trying to build up right now. And most of the physical things you can get at Medical supply stores. Gauze, tape (including paper tape, some people can’t handle the adhesive in the regular medical tape) ace wraps, and the like.

Medical preps are something that many Preppers overlook. I went the other way. I have loaded our medical preps to the max and have discussed longevity of the meds with our Doctor. I also have things like surgical clamps, Stethoscope, Blood Pressure device, and even a Sugar Level meter and test strips even though neither of us have Diabetes. If I have any leftover meds, they go straight into the Med Prep Bag. I added a Geiger Counter and Potassium Iodide pills also. If I die, at least I'm going to know why.

This is good to know as I have a few friends who may need to go this route.

My wife has been a diabetic I since she was 13 years-old. The best we can do is get a 90-day supply out of the insurance company. The Doctor has agreed to provide a more than 90-day script but we would have to pay $245- per vial, out of pocket.

We are seriously thinking of getting a 6-month scrip separate from her 90-day insurance script and biting the bullet to buy the extra vials and rotating through to keep the 9-month supply fresh.

Regardless, if their was no insulin available and MrsMac was forced to dip into her reserves, she would be dead after 9-months. We know this and accept it.

That is tough. Ever look into getting the supplies to make your own insulin? Could be a last ditch attempt. Also, any ability to get insulin from our northern friends?

I need to send you a Dm soon. I take synthroid as a maintenance following cancer treatment in my neck. I have a sort to mid term supply but building it has been slow.

What do you say to your doctor to get a script to get meds from a foreign country?
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

Research out the Canadian pharmacy you want, call them and ask what they need.  Probably little more than a proper paper script.  BT/DT.

Also, look at goodrx.com or WeRx.com.  Call around to different pharmacies.  I was on a med and walmart wanted $156 for a 30 day supply.  Checked another (40 miles away) and they were $38 for the same thing.  Found another and got it for $20.50.

I know how to find less expensive drugs.  Might take some work but its worth it.  Again, BT/DT.
