I know they're rather uncommon, but if anybody sees one, let me know.

Are you looking specifically a brit HP, or any HP? You can pick-up Hungarian HP-clones for alot less and the same quality. On gunbroker, do a search for 'FEG'.

Crystal, why are you specific in your quest for a Browning Hi Power handgun? Mine is from Belgium and have owned for 25+ years or so. She functions flawlessly if you don't use +P ammo with a bullet larger then 124gr. The 147gr ones like Win. Black Talon (If you can still find this ammo) tend to not feed well in my Hi Power well.

Just wondering  :what:

On another note, trivia question: Why is the Browning Hi Power pistol called Hi Power? No googling the answer?  ;)

Mine functions perfect.  It does not care what you feed it or anything.  It is as near perfection as about anything can be.

All right! I'm going to kill two birds with two stones....one at a time.

Crudos, I've got a wad of Christmas money that needs to be spent. I've always kinda wanted an all-steel 9mm pistol. The British Hi Powers seem to be one of the rarer variants, and since Obama won't even let our OWN surplus weapons into the country, I doubt the thousands of pistols the Brits just swapped for Glocks will be coming any time soon. I'm aware of the FEG clones.

Having said that, I'm also looking at other options. Stoeger Cougar, SIG P6, etc. I love my Springfield 1911, so I'm already familiar with the platform in a sense. At the same time, I've got a girlfriend who wants to learn how to shoot. She did not like my Glock 21 at all (yes, I started her off on .22s first, she did better with a S&W 18 than my Marlin rifle). In the back of my mind I'm thinking, "I'll get something for myself, and if she likes it, I'll buy her another one as a gift when she gets her BA."

Johnny! See above.

As to your question, the Hi Power was originally adopted by the Belgians and French (the latter called it the P35, ie, 1935). It was called the "Hi Power" because no other pistol at that time could match its 13-round magazine capacity. Unless you had a snail drum for your Luger, the only one that even came close was the Mauser C96, with ten rounds.

@Crystalhunter

Did you swap the backstrap to the smallest size on the glock before you handed it to your girlfriend? Firing a gun when the grip is too big for your hand feels terrible. I ended up with an S & W, M & P .40 cause the small backstrap fits my hand and I love it. They make it in a 9mm also, if the lady would prefer an improved version of a glock   ;D

I got nothin helpful to say about your British Hi Power conquest, but congrats on finding a chick who's open to learning to shoot!  :thumbsUp:

The Glock 21 was a 3rd Gen, so no backstrap option. I probably should have let her try the 1911 first. Maybe she'll like the Glock 19 better. If not, maybe the .38 colt. Worst comes to worst we'll just go to the rental range.

On a slightly different topic, anyone here familiar with the Star BM?

I've heard good things about FEG. Recently however, I've decided to go with a SIG p225 if I can find one at the gun show this Saturday. I kinda fancy a Makarov too...

Sig 225 or P6 (West German Police turn-ins) would be a great choice. Used to be able to get them under $300 not that long ago, but like everything, the prices have gone up quite a bit.

Most of the ones I saw for sale online were at least $400. I've changed my mind, yet again, lol. Since the Glock 19 serves most of my carry needs, I'm going to get a .22 conversion kit and then a S&W 640 to serve as a backup piece.

The latest mailed catalog I got from SOG had them, but was looking at their website this morning and they are not showing up, unless they only have a one or two left. Probably call them if interested.
