about a guy rattlesnake bit on the head of it while hunting with a buddy. Rather than suck the venom out, buddy tells him he gonna die.
Well, I ran across an article on Drudge linking an article on Bloomberg about this type injury. The NEJM article has pics. Yes I had to look. You should too. In case you ever need to drain in snake country, you will remember to take appropriate precautions.

Come on, Man Up, do your duty and learn your lesson. Make sure you are careful if you get out in the Jersey Pine Barrens.

Surprising enough, I have never run into a Timber Rattlesnake out there. Other snakes, sure, but I have yet to be able to find one - which is a bummer because I would like to see one (from a safe distance) in the wild.

try the ATC in PA or VA - they like to sun themselves on the trail in the afternoons.
-i used to be a trail maintainer for the Appalachian Trail in Maryland.

I have seen them up there also. Frequently about 3 foot.
Once I came across the big daddy of Timbers on a trail on Skyline Drive. He was about 4 - 4 1/2 foot long and about 4 inches diameter a foot back from his head. And he wern't taking nothing from nobody. When he let you know he was nearby you knew it and you knew you should back up slowly and carefully.
