Refrigeration
« on: May 17, 2018, 06:42:19 PM »
Some prepper food lists say to store Jelly, Jams, Mayonnaise and other items that require refrigeration after opening. To me, for the two of us that means the smallest package available if you don't have away of refrigerating the left overs. I know you can get single use mayo, jelly, mustard and soy sauce also hot sauce. Is there any other items that you can think of in single use packages and where to get them?
You guys that are single I know are smart enough should have an answer.

For the hot sauces, you can go here: https://www.campingsurvival.com/hotsauces.html   The single use packets should be available from most restaurant supply stores.

We buy in bulk and I've found that both soy sauces and hot sauces do not require refrigeration after opening due to the amount of preservatives or salt that they contain.  We make our own hot sauces, and don't refrigerate after opening, because the vinegar and salt do a great job of preservation.

JK I already have a bunch of single use packets and hot sauce. I guess I didn't correctly explain what I meant. I was asking if there were any other types of single or two person food/condiment packages than what is commonly known. I just don't want to waste food when SHTF because the cans are over sized for two people.
There are video's to keep small amounts of food cool like this one.

Thanks KBOP that's what I was looking for. I didn't know olive oil came in single use packets and a few other things I didn't know about.

When all else fails, 12VDC is always a good place to look. I once had a 12VDC refridgerator that you could plug into a cigarette lighter in your car. It worked great and it was only about $70. They're still available but probably a little higher price now.

Just a FYI...

As I have written in the past MrsMac and I lived on a 30' sailboat for eleven years. We DID NOT refrigerate items like mayonnaise, ketchup, Asian type sauces, etc.

In essence the reason that manufactures suggest you refrigerate after opening is because when you dip your knife or spoon or whatever into the jar you often leave food particles in the container which can spoil. If you do that no worries and no refrigeration is needed.
