Title: Product Review: Soylent
Post by: Grudgie on July 30, 2014, 03:43:14 AM
So I just recieved this a new product called Soylent that I will be reviewing over the next month.

Basically, Soylent is an all-in-one food that contains every known substance the human body needs to survive on. It started off as a kickstarter campaign made by a college student, and quickly gained a large following.

I received one months worth of the stuff. It comes sealed in pouches with each pouch containing roughly a day's worth of calories. You simply mix the Soylent with water in a 1:1 ratio along with the included bottle of oil. The oil is kept separate from the Soylent itself to preserve the shelf life of of the Soylent, which is itself a dry powder.

The packaging is high quality and very easy to use. Infact the entire company reminds me of Apple. They start by explaining the 'WHY' of their product whereas other companies would focus on the how. Everything about it is user friendly, simple, and minimalistic.

Here is an included  paragraph that explains their mentality:
"The powder you know behold is more than meets the eye. This mix of mass, energy, and information is the staple food of the future, Refined, robust, and efficient. Soylent is food that works, And it would not be here if not for you.
You are a vital member of the network that transformed Soylent from information to matter, from idea to flesh. Your contribution and support make you an integral part of Soylent, the structures of which are soon to become an integral part of you.
Remember every sip of Soylent is a tiny gratuity toward producing food ephemerally, toward reducing health disparity, toward answering questions about our food and ourselves that have gone unanswered for too long.
If you are what you eat, you may now consider yourself healthy and practical.

Thank you for ordering, and do stay on touch."
     -Rob Rhinehart  CEO of Soylent.

Now about the taste............... not bad. It's a bit chalky but not unpleasant. A faint vanilla taste and a very mild taste in general. Much more pallet-able when it is cold.

I plan to start cold turkey tommorow eating nothing but Soylent for one week. After that, I may supplement my diet with normal foods, eating Soylent only for breakfast.

Interesting Grudgie.

It would be interesting (I know it's a pain) to have a normal blood test (Cholesterol, blood sugar, etc.) done. At least, monitor your weight and other KPI's you can do like taking your blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.

I am however curious whether this is a practical prep item weight + size % nutritional value.

how much hard labor/exercise can you do while eating that and not becoming protein + salt deficient.

I am glad someone here is willing to be a guinea pig for this stuff.

I watched this mini-doc about Soylent a while back:

Day 1 and I'm still alive. The taste seems to be getting better.

No can do. I don't even own a set of bathroom scales. But I am around 5 pounds away from having abs so I am hoping to get there. I am young and work a physical job so I am pretty healthy to begin with.

I knew this was coming.. let me help you get it out of your system.

IT'S PEOPLE! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sp-VFBbjpE#)

It isn't people infact.. though a a quote from the CEO makes me wonder, "..You are a vital member of the network that transformed Soylent from information to matter, from idea to flesh."

Yes it's pretty much that. The salt content is pretty low. I am considering supplementing it with pickles that contain 0 calories and salt.
Judging that it is smaller than an MRE, and a shelf life of over 2 years, it would make a good prep item. It comes in small, rectangular boxes each containing a week's worth of calories so it is very easy to see how much you have. It could always be supplemented with chicken eggs, lard, or anything else you might need extra of. This level of nutrition would be hard to prep otherwise.

I only came to this post to find a "green" comment but I am really interested to see how this goes. Especially since we're not, , technically, legally permitted to buy MREs in this country.

Yeah I only discovered this recently when I was trying to get some for our get home bags. No civilian is permitted to be in possession of the local MREs and to import them you need to apply for a special permit which requires a security clearance. No one can show me where it stands in black and white but everyone I contacted gave me the same response. The few places that do keep them can only bring in small quantities at a time and go through hell to get them from customs every time.

I think we should report this human rights violation!  O0

or just ship you a box and call it go-gurt.

How about other pre-packaged bulk prepper food choices? Like Wise or Mountain House, are they banned too? Just trying to figure out why MRE's. I know taste-wise, they range from acceptable to holy-shit-I-wouldn't-use-this-for-target-practice, but food is food.

I'm not sure. I plan on doing some more research into it (had a rough couple of months so haven't had as much time for my preps as I would like) but it would explain why it's so hard to find. Once I get some more info I'll post it in my South African Preppers thread for anyone who is interested so that grudgie can have his topic back.

Ok how about an update on the product, I'd like to try this stuff if it's palatable and functional.  :)

I'm still going strong. It is palletable and functional. It makes me feel full till lunch, and lunch till supper.

What's great is I don't feel overly full or bloated after I eat 7-800 calories of it. There are also no energy spikes, but a steady stream of energy all day long.

Ofcourse I crave greasy foods, sweets, and salt. But just don't think about it and keep it away from you and you'll be good...

Ah... I'm enjoying a glassful as I type.

Not much more to report on. I can easily switch between Soylent and regular foods without stomach pain or adjustment. I give it a thumbs up. I am considering getting a monthly subscription to Soylent and eating it for breakfast.

 :bravo:

Might be a good idea to keep track of weight, blood pressure, general health and mood in the long term using Soylent. There could be some interesting info that comes to the surface.

So a little update. Some of the oil bottles from some of the Soylent I have left over leaked. Everything is still there but the bottles are all sticky. Apparently this is problem for other people as well.

The new Soylent 1.4 has gone away from liquid oil to including it in the powder form. It also reports a shelf life increase to 2 years.

Ofiicial changes include:

- Removal of bottled oil blend
- Fat sources are now powdered oils: sunflower, flaxseed, safflower
and life’sDHA algal oil. The bottled canola & fish oil blend is no
  longer utilized.
- Digestibility and glycemic index improvements
- Macronutrient ratio has shifted from 50/30/20 to 43/40/17
- carbs/fat/protein.
- Oat flour content reduced from 110g to 70g/pouch.
- Maltodextrin content reduced from 165g to 70g/pouch.
- Protein content reduced from 113g to 84g/pouch.
- Carbohydrate source is now a blend of oat flour, corn
- maltodextrin, isomaltulose, and food starches (potato, rice).
- Gum acacia removed.
- Soluble fiber content reduced from 10g to 3.9g/pouch.
- Total fiber content reduced from 30g to 16g/pouch.
- Other formula changes
- Sodium content increased from 1080mg to 1640 mg/pouch.
- Chloride content increased from 1260mg to 2300mg/pouch.
- Artificial vanilla flavor removed.

What is the proper link for this stuff.  I have looked at Soylent.ME  but it shows (or I find) nothing about the 1.4 stuff.

Is that the right place or ??

I still have the original 1.0 Soylent. I haven't ate any until today one year later. Other than the liquid oil being a little wanky it tastes the same. No ill effects. The Soylent and oil were stored in a dark place at room temperature.
