Title: How do you prove it?
Post by: JoJo on June 22, 2018, 08:36:17 PM
Preppers and numismatists will know but how do you prove to the general population, those that are still living of course that your 1960 quarter is more valuable than his 1970 quarter. How do you prove after TEOTWAWKI that yours is silver and his isn’t, Or that your dollar coin is worth more than his paper one.
Not all non-preppers will die off right away, some are very resourceful, I know of a few that could last for quite awhile and they have valuable skills to trade.
I believe that medicines will be used as currency more than coin or food with clean water a close second. Common medicines like Tussen, Aspirin, Stool Softener, and anti-dihedral. Also Iodine, Triple-Antibiotic and Band-Aids.
These items cost a lot less and are worth a lot than silver coin now but will be worth much more than other currencies when SHTF.
 What say you?

Use a Fisch kit for proving silver.  And there's a separate one for gold.  Paper money will be an okay fire starter, or you could use it to wipe your butt.  It won't have much value otherwise.

All those items are great barter items, but I'd have to add Ammo and Toilet Paper. I've stocked up on all that stuff you listed and I've even got some decent grocery store canned food that I wouldn't like to eat but somebody else might love to have if they're hungry. Hey!!!! Nobody gets my Peanut Butter!

I have written this before but what the heck I will right it again since their new people on the forum.

When you go to the hardware store for 1/4" bolts nuts and washers for a project you are working on buy double. When you go to the paint store for a gallon of paint, brushes, paint thinner. Double your purchase of brushes and paint thinner. When you go to NAPA for oil or oil filter double your order.

Over a period of time you will have a nice back-up supply of stuff for your use or barter.

Show them the brown stripe around the edge.  Let them know that is copper alloy or junk metal, not silver.

Your missing my point. How do you prove your coin be it silver or gold is worth something. You can't eat either and a pile of it will not keep you alive. Is stocking up on silver or other cash type of currency worth it?
JohnyMac is thinking along the lines of my post.

I was asked recently what precious metals I bought.  Lead, brass and gilding metals was my reply.

Ah, I see.  Its only worth what the person on the other side of the deal will agree it is worth.  If no agreement, no deal.  No deal with him you move on to the next.

There's many variables which effect the worth of precious metals, depending upon the timeline of the SHTF event.  During the initial period, the traditional bullets, beans and band-aids will have a high trading value.  Once civilization becomes re-established, then precious metals would have an increased value.  Personally, I would never trade firearms or ammunition because they could be potentially used against me.  Transferable knowledge is probably one of the best investments, because there's no storage overhead.  So learn a trade or skill which could have a definite value after a SHTF event, i.e., trapping, blacksmithing, or farming would be in great demand during a long term, widespread event.

You can't. If internet is down nobody will know what the hell metal is worth if they can't check spot price. The going rate might be $5 in one county and then $200 2 counties over.

Now, that one is easy to answer. It will be worth whatever someone is willing to trade something else for it. Where you are standing at that moment will determine what its worth. During the California and the Alaska gold rushes, a shovel might cost you $100 and that same shovel in Kentucky might cost $3. When the SHTF, you better have something pretty valuable to offer if you want any of my Silver.

And you better have something way double beautiful pretty valuable if you want some of my food or ammo or medical stuff.

I'm with you on that. I'll have extra Food, Ammo, and Medicine and trading with me will be a bit stiff. Not so stiff as to make me not want to look at myself in the mirror when I'm shaving though. However, I will not forget that when I run out of supplies, I'm screwed. The Silver and Gold thing makes a lot of sense to me because carrying around everything that I'm willing to trade seems a bit awkward. I'm going with the notion that people will be happy to trade in Silver and Gold.

Today, what you consider "extra" may be all you have left, 6 months after the SHTF
