Guinea Pig - It's What's For Dinner??

I hate to post anything by "The Young 'tards," but this looks tasty.  Apparently guinea pigs are twice as efficient as cows when it comes to the ratio of feed required - to meat produced.  Maybe these critters would make for an excellent long term sustainable protein source.  They breed like rodents, are easy to handle, don't take up much space, can be grass/vegetation fed, and most importantly are virtually noiseless (when compared to chickens or goats) making for a very low profile.  One thing I don't know about them is how cold of a climate can they tolerate.

Does anyone here know anything about the conditions needed for guinea pigs to survive and thrive?

I would imagine that eating enough of them would be the same as eating nothing but rabbit. A big NoNo

Yeah, it's the very dense white meat (like in rabbits) that can cause kidney problems and even brain damage in young children.  I sort of assumed since they were talking about it solving the world's food situation, it didn't have the same kind of protein composition... but who knows.

That roasted Guinea doesn't look half bad!

I wonder if they are better than ducks? I know in the world of poultry you can't beat a duck, they lay eggs, make meat and most importantly they make FAT.

I've read that a duck will make a pound of meat for 1.4 pounds of feed (making it the most efficient meat producing bird), I don't know if that is in an environment we wouldn't replicate or if it was eating grass in the lawn but I do know that they will forage all their needs if you turn them out.

Once he totally ate a squirrel! He had it skinned in the sink and cooked it in the oven! I think if it was the last resort, MAYBE, but just because? I don't know!
