Black Walnuts
« on: November 22, 2016, 03:55:09 PM »
What happened to them? By the beginning of November I usually collect about ten gallons of them, two five gallon buckets. This year I wanted to try to harvest the walnut meat but not a one could be found. I have three Black Walnut trees and my neighbor has two which hang over into my yard. There isn't even any on the trees. Now when it comes to leaves that's another story. My neighbors and I have an over abundance of leaves this year.
Has anyone have a fruit, nut or perennial food producing plant that didn't this year?
True story; I had a fig tree that I pulled out because it didn't produce fruit for years. Well a couple of years ago my wife admitted our granddaughter would eat them before I would see them.

Pecans have had nearly no production in S. Ga this year.  Sister has 27 producing trees that usually go 150-175 pounds each.  Theirs are the Stuart, commercial grade trees.  Usually about 4500-5000 pounds a year.

Due to lack of rain this year, they might get 200 pounds of usable nuts total.  Not enough to make rolling and sorting worthwhile.

Reportedly thats not unusual this year all over SE U.S.

Plenty of acorns but not one Black Walnut.

JoJo, you know we haven't been invited over to our neighbors to gather black walnuts this year. Like what Kbop wrote, this year there is a bumper crop of acorns.

Black walnuts often skip years.  It's not uncommon at all.  It depends on water amounts, temperatures, age of the tree, pollination, etc.  If you see any other signs of ill health or your trees don't produce several years in a row you'll want to check and make sure you're not infected with canker or other issues.

Thanks WPW for the tips I'll have to check the trees. We had a dry summer but not to hot. Lots of acorns and leaves, WOW do I have leaves this tear.
