Title: The Value(s) of Radio and our SOI
Post by: Sir John Honeybucket on January 11, 2022, 09:20:43 PM
Being on the weekly radio nets, it pleases me that we are able to discuss things which SHOULD be discussed over broadcast media (the propaganda mills) but is not.  Simple things like local prices, food/tools/material scarcities, thoughts on garden seeds, canning/storage methods &etc.  These are not only not generally covered by the controlled media, but are often either censored and/or they are actively ridiculing (as per Saul D. Alinsky  :pissed:  ) any thoughts of self-sufficiency.

Our on-air exchanges of regional reports, ability to hold round-table or one-on-one discussions after net & etc. is very valuable. If you're not participating in the ham radio nets yet, please consider joining.  It's already valuable right now and if things go  SPLAT! as can so easily happen    :faint:    with infrastructure based communications, grid &etc. it becomes increasingly valuable to be able to communicate independently, to send/receive reports of conditions outside of our immediate surroundings  , exchange thoughts and to gain from the experiences of other who develop work arounds.

The ERIN Radio-Tavern of the Air !

Yup, radio will be where its at. For those that don't have HF gear or a license, you can always listen using http://www.websdr.org/ (http://www.websdr.org/).  If thats not enough to get you started, i don't know what is.

Depending on if we have to QSY, you just put the numbers from the SOI into the page.

Shortwave radios are GREAT! Just make sure they are SSB (Single Sideband) compatible. 90% of voice comms are done via SSB anymore. For all intents and circumstances AM (amplitude modulation) nobody uses it anymore. FM (frequency modulation) is used in the 134-174 Mhz band.

Remember, you do not have to be a ham to buy ham equipment and listen. The Icom 718 and 735 will run ya' around $250- and are both great no fuss no muss radios.

Have the Skywave with SSB.  It also does AM/FM, WX, SW.
Have used the antennae extension and spent a little time surfing around but awfully quiet most of the time...
