Title: October 2021 ERIN Net SOI
Post by: JohnyMac on September 30, 2021, 09:37:45 AM
The 75-meter phone experiment in September just didn't go well. So, in October we will be going back to 40-meters for phone but stay on 80-meters for digital.  I have written the SOI to reflect that information in both digital and phone below. i suspect we will revisit 75-meters for phone in November.

Here is the SOI for this coming Tuesday's net.

The next ERIN net will be Tuesday October 26, 2021, starting at 1900 hrs. eastern with the digital ERIN net. The PACE for that net is as follows,

1) At 1900 hrs. eastern the digital net will commence.

Primary         3.588 Mhz USB Contestia 4/250 1000 on the Waterfall
Alternate       7.110 Mhz USB Contestia 4/250 1000 on the Waterfall
Contingency  This email thread
Emergency    Text. Do I have your cell phone number?

When the Net Control Station (NCS) calls for check-in's this is the reporting format,

de your call/name/location/emergency traffic/ de your call

Once the NCS has gathered check-in's he/she will post the check-in's for corrections or additional check-in's.

The NCS will then start the reports portion of the digital net. Report format will be,

de your call/name/location/traffic if any/your report for around your AO, Covid, unrest, military movement, etc/weather/de your call

2) At 2000 hrs the voice net will commence.

Primary         3.969 Mhz LSB or higher till clear air
Alternate       7.251 Mhz LSB or higher till clean air
Contingency  This email thread
Emergency    Text. Do I have your cell phone number?

The above SOI will be used at first, if the interwize is taken down through Executive Order -- Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions. Then we will develop and share a revised SOI.

73 & God Bless,
Johnymac

When SSB net began on the hour, JM was loud.  Within 15 minutes, as sundown propagation went long, he's totally undetectable here in coastal Virginia.

I copied the Digital net and then participated in the Phone Net. The band was great until right at the end when it just collapsed.

Excellent print here in coastal Virginia.  Information flow like this is VERY good to see and to participate in.  Right now its mostly local interest, however, it could be handy to know what daily life is like throughout the region, in that critical "One-Tank-of-Gas-Distance".

TAPRN NET !  I ESPECIALLY MISS THE SUNDAY/3818 NET AND OF COURSE THE MELODIOUS VOICE OF MISS R. THE MOST EXCELLENT NET CONTROL OPERATOR.  IT WAS EASY TO FIND HER CHEERFUL VOICE ON THE BANDS.

Thank you Sir John! For phone, we are right at that time where we will have to straddle 40 & 75-meters till we completely move over to 75-meters for phone due to the time of the year.

Digital this evening was GREAT! we had eight checkin's and two that I missed their whole call due to hieroglyphics. Often, you get the hieroglyphics because the TX (mic) or RX (speakers) are set a pinch to high. Mine are set at 14% of total volume. And during the QSO I adjust according to propagation. Chk out your ALC meter when TXing. There should be no bars on this digital meter.

Phone we had 7 even though we moved from 40 to 75-meters due to QRM.

Like a dummy, I closed out my FLDIGI when I went to phone but some important and great reports came through loud and clear. Like,

> Meijer's supermarkets in the middle west north where limiting purchases of canned goods and
    protein.
> The Ohio Governor is thinking of calling out the National Guard to drive buses for kids and to
drive trucks from warehouses to stores
> Petrol is anywhere from $1.00 to $1.35 a gallon from a year ago.
> Some folks reported outs or low quantities in paper products (TP and paper towels). I saw this in
the Philly area today first hand
> Pork and beef are at about twice the price as this time last year. I saw low quantities and out of
poultry. I suspect we will see shorts and low quantities in turkeys for Thxgiving. Buy early!
> Digital checkin's reported a rise in local crime. Petty theft on up to armed robbery.
> Other localized and specific to folks who checked in shortages in supermarkets.
> Some businesses have reduced hours due to staffing. On the way to Philly today I stopped at a
Micky D's tp buy a dbl cheeseburger and go to the head. The restaurant was only open to drive
through's. When I went to the drive through, I questioned the window lady and she told me that
only 3-people showed up today. A very popular local restaurant is closed now on Tuesday's due
    to worker availability.
> In the Philly area today, about 50% of the customers in the big box grocery store was wearing
masks. This is up from about 2-weeks ago. Locally, (very rural) nobody is wearing a mask.

That is all I can remember. Next week I will not close the FLDIGI program so my report is full of holes like tonight. If you where on either net, please fill the group in on what I may have missed.

 :bravo:  JM
This is EXACTLY what 'communication' is for: USEFUL information exchange: what we used to call 'actionable intelligence'.

For Example: If I hear from someone I've gotten to know on the nets, that supply chain disruption on specific needed products are occuring elsewhere, MAY-BE I'll be bright enough to make some contingency plans for when/if it happens here - and if especially bright, plan for similar events and their follow-on results. If I'm especially 'saintly' (don't hold you breath on that one ...) maybe I can HELP from a little of our surplus and get the team mates on track. Just don't ask for my dark chocolate, English tobacco ("My 965") or aged Scotch, because of firm personal priorities  :word:

Seriously though, the nets are working and likely - because we keep it simple - we probably have many LISTENERS who are gaining from the informatino presented, and more if the WWW goes belly-up; censorship and all. After-all, a plastic shortwave receiver capable of SSB and a way to transfer the audio to a computer is very simple and effective. BT&DT.

Thank you Sir John.

I took NC Scout's SIGNET class and it was amazing what you can learn by just listening. Be it radio or your neighbor at the local watering hole. The secret is just separating the chafe from the grain. I do this by gathering a host of info from seperate sources then reducing them down to a nice information sauce.

Based on this evening's net and my observations today, I am going to buy some additional paper products this week. I am good for beef and pork however, I will keep an eye peeled for poultry on sale. I have also been looking at adding some new hens to the current flock. It looks I will have to wait for spring to either buy some more chic's or hatching my own eggs. Kind of late adding chicks to the flock at this time of year.

Noise is S9+ on 75 tonight, could barely hear that there was a voice there but couldn't make out any words.

Here's what I heard, even with all the filters cranked up to "11"

The band was weird. I heard some stations very strong across the band and others were very weak. Not much middle ground tonight. I did check in and chatted with Johnny Mac at 3.9700.

Great Digital net with eight folks checking in while phone was poor. We had three check-ins.

The overall reports circled around some minor outs and prices in folks grocery stores. Petrol took a major jump across the board. I do not think there is any states checking in that had petrol under $2.99 a gallon. In my neck of the woods, petrol jumped two times within the past 7-days. It is now at $3.59 a gallon for 87-octain. I have not looked at diesel lately but it was $3.99 a gallon the last time I checked.

Thanks for playing.

I was able to fill up both vehicles yesterday at $2.29/gal.  Of course this was with a 90cent off a gallon card through Kroger for purchase points.  Great to go when they have a 4x credit on gift cards.

Headache of it all is I am out of points, cash, and that stuff for the rest of the month.

I was able to copy the digital net 100%.  On the phone net, all I could hear was an occasional few syllables from the NCS.  I copied Cooter 100%, so it was definitely poor propagation to the South.  Regional nets may work better, until the propagation stabilizes.

Gas here is at $3.19/gal.  Sometimes electric vehicles make sense, if you can produce the necessary electricity yourself.

I totally and encourage regional nets. Then post a summary here.

Thoughts? Maybe start them in November. This wouldn't mean you couldn't join the other net if propagation was good.

Quick over view of the digital and phone ERIN nets tonight.

There was eight folks on digital of which 2 were relays. There were six folks on the phone net.

Covid in all reports were non existing from Fl (relay) north to upstate NY.

Petrol prices ranged from $3.10 (FL) on up to $3.59 (NE PA) a gallon. Empty shelves continue but not at a serious level as yet. Price in the grocery str are noticeably higher. In my AO, less and less pet food on the shelves. Paper products are not out but plenty of empty shelves. No roasting chickens in my local grocery stores for the past 2 1/2 weeks. When I was down in the Philly area 2-weeks ago, there were NO paper products in a big box grocery str.

One station reported a shooting at the local Dollar store.

Weather seems to be a bit warmer along the eastern seaboard north of the MD line however, with that report, the first snow of the season is reported to hit next week in my AO.

If I missed anything please update my report.
