Title: January 2023 ERIN SOI
Post by: JohnyMac on December 31, 2022, 12:30:50 PM
Here is the SOI for this coming Tuesday's net. The December primary phone net frequency will now be 3.964 Mhz LSB up or down the band a few clicks till we find clear air.

The next ERIN net will be Tuesday January 31, 2023, starting at 1900 hrs. eastern with the digital ERIN net. The PACE for that net is as follows,

1) At 1900E hrs. digital net (NCS is usually on frequency at 1850E hrs) will commence.

Primary         3.588 Mhz USB Contestia 4/250 1000 on the Waterfall
Alternate       7.110 Mhz USB Contestia 4/250 1000 on the Waterfall
Contingency  This email thread
Emergency    Text. Do I have your cell phone number?

When the Net Control Station (NCS) calls for check-in's this is the reporting format,

de your call, your call/name/location/emergency traffic/ de your call

Once the NCS has gathered check-in's he/she will post the check-in's for corrections or additional check-in's.

The NCS will ask for a Volun-TOLD to act as back up. They will be the ANCS station.

The NCS will then start the reports portion of the digital net. Report format will be,

de your call/name/location/traffic if any/your report for around your AO, Covid, unrest, military movement, weather, petrol & diesel prices and availability, etc/de your call

Suggestion...Pre type out your report then copy & paste it to your FLdigi when it is your time to give your report. I am also going to encourage sending a SITREP report using AmRRoN's reporting format. More to come on this.

2) At 2000 hrs (I am typically on frequency at 1950E hrs) will commense.
Primary         3.964 Mhz LSB or higher till clear air
Alternate       7.279 Mhz LSB or higher till clean air
Contingency  This email thread
Emergency    Text. Do I have your cell phone number?

The above SOI will be used at first, if the interwiz is taken down through Executive Order -- Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions. Then we will develop and share a revised SOI.

73 & God Bless,
Johnymac

Couldn't pull the NCS out of all the QRN.  We had thunderstorms most of the day, so I'm sure it was a contributing factor to the noise level.

I missed the skeds, but I have a couple of good excuses.  The sun was in my eyes, the dog ate my SOI.

Well the new transceiver, a Yaesu FTDX-10 has arrived and it is almost setup.

Still working on my mic gain and FLdigi.

I am recruiting volunteers to have a phone QSO with me to fine tune the audio out. I can RX 100% on digital including FLamp and FLmsg. Just need to figure out why I can not TX yet. I am sure I missed a click here or there. Maybe the digital mic is set to high. I will figure it out  ^-^

First impressions of the DX-10...

> RX is incredible. I can filter out 95% of ground and QRM noise.
> I am using new Heil muffs and they sound great.
> The only criticism and it may not be warranted, is where the TS 590s was built like a brick house, the DX-10
seems to be more of a stick built house.

More to come.

Well Johnny, I see we have a new member of the "My crap doesn't work Club". My grandson bought me the latest and greatest version of Ham Radio Deluxe for Christmas. Hot Dog! Now I'll have Rig Control and also be able to recieve and transmit Digital on my IC 7300. Nope.... I was able to get the Rig Control to work but I can't make the Digital Master 780 work. I even spent about an hour on the phone with some guy at Ham Radio Deluxe Support and I changed a few settings but got no where. I've printed out some instructions that I got from him by email and I'll fool around with them before I throw in the towel.

Hmmm.... After my last post, I sat down with the computer and the IC 7300 and tried my best to follow a sheet full of instructions on making Ham Radio Deluxe and Digital Master work. Say what? I actually got it to work. Then for some reason it went all stupid on me and stopped working properly. I have full rig control in HRD but the DM780 is really flakey. I didn't change anything but it just doesn't work right. I'll keep trying and if it doesn't work out, I'll ask Johnny to get his friend who is supposed to be a wiz at making it work to help me over the phone. One way or another, I'll get that damned program to operate properly. :chuky:

Things like this are always very frustrating.

I reached out to a 7300 guru for you gents and he responded that he hasn't used HRD in general since 2012. Sorry Brother.

On the flip side, you did get ahold of someone at HRO. That is a first.

Ah -- "LOUD" as in your signal was 20 over S9 down here.  Audio was fine, not distorted at all.

Very good signal on 80m digital, though digital scripting must be TRIMMED so that traffic gets passed early in the nets.

Voice net was worthwhile. I don't generally pick-up a miscorphone, considering vioce on HF radio to be the spawn of Statn, However, I made an exception for ERIN net. I have unplugged this "mile-row-fone" contraption and thrown it behind the couch where it belongs, at least until next week.  Back to good, old Morse code for me.

NOTE:  Tonight's Morse sked with Cooter (from  him in Florida to me in Virginia) again went very well, even with DEEP fading and interference from over the horizon radar and also a mil high speed digital signal climbing on top here at my Bayside home.  We passed his SITREP and my radiogram to him, bothexchanged as formal, formatted radio traffic (Radiogram) in roughly 5 minutes.  That's slow & steady, hand sent Morse code. Slow and steady is far more productive than fast & messy, requiring many 'fills' (repeated messages).

Sir John I agree on the length of the preamble of the digital net. I will work on it. I loved the picture you posted.

All n' all good net.

Digital had 7 and phone had 7 too.

I apologize to digital and phone as K3AT made two appearances.  He walked across my key board during digital and played with my settings on the radio during the phone net.

Thanks all for your patience.

Good SSB net tonight, despite the usual troglodytes who started blabbing 2 KHz down, clearly interfering with the ongoing net.    :pissed:    Voice is fine, but digital does the heavy lifting. In our[personal]  weekly sked, Cooter was using his MIGHTY 4 Watt CW QRP rig and it was easy to write down his message/ ERIN report so that I could pass it on to ERNI net control station.  His radio fits in a shirt pocket.

At my QTH, the QRM wasn't as bad as the QRN.  We have a front approaching, which seems to be generating a lot of atmospheric noise.  I was able to copy some of the net, but it was tough.

Good digital and phone net tonight.

Digital
Two check-ins from PA and VA each
One check-in from NC, NJ, and NY.
One relay from FL.

Phone
Three from PA
Two from VA
One from TN and FL.

K3AT showed up to walk across my keyboard during the digital net which caused a hiccup and he reappeared after being scolded to lay across my transceiver only to poke a couple of buttons and change all my setting's on my new radio.

I spoke gruffly to him and then MrsMac told me to stop picking on the cat.

Life at the redoubt.

I was glad to ACCIDENTALLY get my radio to transmit on the digital net tonight. I've still got a ways to go before I will trust it to work properly. As for the Phone net, I was sure glad that I have an IC 7300 because There was a heterodyne right on top of the frequency and I played around with the NOTCH FILTER controls and killed it. Then there was the jerk that was just above us who was WAAAAYYYY wider than his allotted 3 Khz. I had to play with the IF shift to filter him out and all was well with the world. Now, I was glad to hear someone comment on Johnny's audio because I hate to be the complainer. Yep, Johhnny, you still need just a little more treble on your TX signal because it did sound like you were getting a bit of Proximity Effect from crowding the mike. Proximity effect usually is very noticable on Dynamic mikes and the closer you get to them the more boomy the bass gets. However, You said you were using a headset mike and those are usually Electret Condensor Mikes and the proximity effect is usually not nearly as noticeable. Backing off the mike a little bit did help but there still was no top end edge to your audio. If there was no noise, no heterodyne, and no splatter, it would have sounded great as a conversational audio setting. In my old age, I'm getting more and more lazy so I hope I have enough gumption to try to get my digital working propery and my time out issue resolved.
