Title: Cheap Baofengs
Post by: Jackalope on March 04, 2017, 02:39:34 PM
For those using the Baofeng UV-5R's, there are some sellers apparently disposing their stock, current price is $7.45 for two UV-5R's, and shipping is free: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-Baofeng-UV-5R-Handheld-FM-Dual-Band-VHF-UHF-Two-way-Walkie-Talkie-Radio-KF/162416527603?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D41668%26meid%3Df72b346a428b4eb5ae13457404920469%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D162415394374 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-Baofeng-UV-5R-Handheld-FM-Dual-Band-VHF-UHF-Two-way-Walkie-Talkie-Radio-KF/162416527603?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D41668%26meid%3Df72b346a428b4eb5ae13457404920469%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D162415394374)

Good find Jackalope. All of ours are UV B5's here at the cabin. Not that the UV 5R's are not good they just take a different battery than the B5's. Trying to keep things simple.

Just bought two and I will be putting them away in a Mylar bag for SHTF.

I bought two and I'll be handing them out to neighbors.  They're definitely disposable radios.

What is the cheapest and simplest way to get a license to operate them? If it wasn't such trying times these would be at the very bottom of my list.

1) Go the library and borrow the ARRL Technicians text book. When two weeks go by reborrow.
2) If you have a smart phone you can down load the Technicians test questions.
3) Read a chapter then take the tests located at the back of the ARRL Technicians test book.
4) With the aforementioned app. through out the day when you are stopped at a light, waiting to go in to see the Dr., sitting on the
    toilet, et cetera.
Answer the questions you will find on the Tech Exam.
5) Find a local test site. Google FCC exam and find out where you can take the test at what time and date. Many clubs offer this service
for free at a nominal cost. I just googled Cincinnati Amateur Radio Club and this (http://www.gcara.org/)came up.
6) My 12 year old neighbor took the exam and passed with 30 multiple choice questions correct out of 35 total questions. You need to
answer 26 our of 35 correct.

Just getting the Technicians Ticket opens your ability to play with UHF/VHF radios before the SHTF.

Hope that helps...

I am dayum glad I read stuff twice and confirm what I think I see.

I looked for those and found them (NOT thru link posted here) at $27 each, or 2 for $54. I started this box commenting on those one cheaper.   Much cheaper than the 2 for $74.90 I initially saw here.  I came back to note that and make sure I was not missing something.

Turns out I found I was missing much.  But did correct myself and ordered 2.  I figure under $8 in hand cannot be too bad an idea.  Maybe I can listen in on some of the goings on around here.

OK, give me due and proper ribbing and then  eye rolls  ::) later in the month.

It is an amazing price.  But even at $27.00 they're a good deal.  We'll see if they're a really good deal once we have them in our hands.

Side note regarding my babble above.

The method of finding I used was more of a search there that the direct link.  I never use the full link posted if there is anything after the --?--.  That part ties in more info to the original poster or make where it links from or some sneaky way of giving more info than dead nuts necessary.  It lightens or darkens the grey more than I like on searching and where I go.  I went bit off track initially on this.  Finding the referred to stuff I did below.

Just going to--

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-Baofeng-UV-5R-Handheld-FM-Dual-Band-VHF-UHF-Two-way-Walkie-Talkie-Radio-KF/162416527603 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-Baofeng-UV-5R-Handheld-FM-Dual-Band-VHF-UHF-Two-way-Walkie-Talkie-Radio-KF/162416527603)

to get there helps stop some bright or dark from getting on you.  So I have been told.

I received a message from Ebay that said the listing has been taken down and if I don't get my order to open a case for a refund.
If a product runs out does the one who listed it take the listing down? Has anyone who ordered the Beofeng's also been notified?

@Nemo Exactly, I think the first email is correct and the one from ebay is to just let people know the seller pulled his ad. If I guess right he sold all of the Beofengs and didn't want to keep getting buyers when he was out of Beofengs.

I received the same message.  Just remember to open the Ebay claim prior to 30 days and you'll get a refund.  I was wondering what was happening since I hadn't received any shipping information.

Did you receive the message with an ETA or just the Item Removed message?

I received a refund from eBay for the original two that I purchased.  So...like Erick, I ordered a couple of more from an eBay seller that has a bit of a track record. http://www.ebay.com/itm/122414495617?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/122414495617?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)   Hopefully I'll get the shipping information tomorrow.  Not a bad deal...make sure you buy a good programming cable for them.  Do not buy the cheap cables, because they don't work.

Did you have to apply for a refund or was it automatic?
How would I apply for it?
Does that company also sell the cable?

Judy : Seller no longer a member of ebay..
I will stop my payment and try for a more established seller.

For some reason my CC lists is as paypal.
I was sure I had pay directly via CC and not paypal .. strange... as I intentionally do not have a CC linked to paypal.

I will dispute the charge and in meantime have ordered from here:

The second ebay seller also disabled their account within a short while after my order came in.
I am now convinced the extreme low price baofeng vendors are all fraudulent.

they probably hope w/ such a small carge you will forget about it

I filed a resolution request with eBay, because it was almost 30 days.  Usually, you have to wait a week before the situation is resolved, but eBay automatically refunded my money within a day or two.

This is almost on topic. A while back I found a pair of Baofeng tri-power UV5Rs on Amazon for about $60. I got them and put the large battery packs on them. Then I attached one to my bugout backpack and the other to my wife's bugout backpack. We're both Hams. The other day I noticed that they still are selling them but 2 for $65. The more I thought about it, the more I convinced myself to buy another pair. My first VHF mobile radio was a 10 watt Yaesu and it worked great in the car. Presently, I have a 5 watt Baofeng in each car as well as a TYT 9000 radio. I monitor the 65 watt TYT just in case the wife calls me on simplex. I then have the dual band HT for scanning the Ham VHF and UHF bands and not missing a call from home. When the two 8 watters arrive, I'll swap them out. Normally I see those 8 watters for about $60 each. The S meter on those 8 watters actually work. The older UV5R's S meters are either full scale or off. In the car, I use the cigarette lighter plug and adaptor instead of the batteries. If someone wants a cheap Mobile rig, that's a pretty easy way to go dual band mobile. Don't get long winded because those 8 watters will get hot pretty fast.

I got an email from my credit card co. which said I received a credit for the amount of the Baofengs  but not the shipping. Half a loaf is better than none.

Yeah I found a place to let me file a request and copied/pasted the email they sent me.  That stated that if I did not receive the items I was already verified to get the refund.

So, lets hope it goes well.

With all this, and having had a headache in the past, I shop Ebay very very little.

I've made some good buys on ebay before.
Despite this experience I think I may want to use it  abit more as amazon is getting too successful in my mind and I dont like emerging monopolies

Walmart  bought up some Chinese corporation and is going whole hog into the online market.  They had their "no shipping charges" limit at $35 when Amazon was at $49.  Amazon dropped their limit to the same.

I expect the battle to continue.

In an earlier post, I said that when the 8 watt BaoFengs show up I was going to swap out the 5 watter's in the cars. Well..... If I try to use high power, the cigarette lighter battery eliminator shuts down. I did a little research and found that the battery eliminators have over voltage and over current protection. That's a good thing and a bad thing. The adapters self protect(good thing) but I can't use high power on them(bad thing). Actually the over voltage protection is really just a voltage regulator that drops the 13.8 volts down to 8.35 volts. 8.35 volts is the same voltage that the battery chargers provide for the 7.4 volt batteries.

Still no joy from eBay.  Their system is too complicated for me to mess with, but I shall battle on.

Anyone have a direct email to a person or complaint dept there?  I really dislike the click this, this, select issue, click here system.

HA, did some more looking, not covered under their money back thing if you buy as a guest.  Remind me to not do eBay again.

Did them once way back, not happy.  But they did do refund back then, after long fight back and forth.

Either way, No More.

Amazon is no different. I ordered two items for our vacuum cleaner from one dealer which was to be SHIPPED FREE. They shipped one item from one dealer which charged shipping and another item from a different dealer who wanted to charge shipping. Canceled one item but the other was on its way.
Will not do business with Amazon again.

You get what you pay for...  I wouldn't trust my life to them, but they're fine as disposable radios, or for trading, or to loan out to folks. Out of the 70+ plus that I've dealt with, only two have gone bad, and one was bad out of box.  They don't take abuse too well, but hey, they're a $25 radio, including charger.
