A couple of pages for my site (on radios)

I have been working on a page about radio communication stuff for the tactically minded prepper/citizen soldier for longer than I care to think about it.  I set a goal of getting it written before I go to a competition this weekend... and have the draft up.

It's always nice to have strangers read stuff and give you impressions, so before they go "live" take a look and let me know what you think.

Hey Currahee great intro articles.

I found a typo  in the radio security article, in it you say "Organized bands of looters in a civil unrest situation may have GMRS or HAM canners", you missed a S.

As suggestions, maybe you can include the phonetic alphabet as you use it to encode numbers, and in a future include the plans on how to make a portable J-Pole.

I was also debating putting the PA in there, and I think I need to.  I'm also going to pout up a PDF of a cheat sheet so that people can get started, it is on there.

WOW Currahee...Great stuff!

Line of site for VHF, GRMS type of radios is so important. Time of day helps in distance too.

When I lived in Marina Del Rey, CA. it was not a problem communicating all of the way to Catalina Island (about 35 miles) once night fell using mast mounted 3 DB antenna's and VHF radio's set to 25 watts during transmission. The only issue was people stepping on you. Remember there are no mountains on the water to absorb the transmission.

6DB antennas didn't seem to work as well if one of the boats was at anchor vs. tied to a dock in a non wake area. That 6DB antenna was just to directional.

Different time: I was able to communicate with my wife who was on our sailboat back at MDR and a Santa Cruz 40 I was taking up the coast to San Francisco; until I was at about the same Lat. as Santa Barbara (80-100 KM NW from MDR). I think it had to do to the fact that both boats had their electronics grounded to a grounding shoe, attached to the keel. Plus, it was again at night.

My point: Mountains inhibit your distance.
