Full Dentures
« on: February 17, 2025, 11:08:17 AM »
I think the crash is just around the corner. I did some thinking about how and what I could eat. A couple of years ago, some kind of acid formed in my mouth and ate all but 4 of my teeth off at the gum line. Nope, it was not hydrochloric acid from my stomach. It tasted more like a mixture of vinegar and sulfuric acid. Anyway, I decided that I'd get a full set of dentures before the crash so, as a Prepper, I could eat whatever I could find. I went to the Dental Clinic, and they did some kind of scan rather than doing an impression. Oh, Hell no!!! It's going to cost $6,250 and they will remove the 4 remaining teeth and also all the roots below the gum line. Then put temporary dentures in until my gums heal. Then they will remove the temps and replace them with my permanent dentures. They got me to pay $2,000 up front and hope my insurance covers the rest. If they don't, then I'll have to eat the rest. Life's a bitch and then you die. :faint:

For those of us in the upper levels of seniority, teeth can be a serious issue.  Some years ago I had a conversation with an elderly gent who spent $40,000, as I recall, on full implants.  He said that it changed his life.

My wife had a single implant last year.  Cost $3,600.  Money well spent PKV.

I know a guy who had 100% replacement with implants due to diabetes issues. He is very happy with them. IIRC he traded construction work for the replacement, around 20K

I had to have a crown put on a tooth.  Dentist did that scan/sonar/video measuring thing.

I told him afterward it was the most unpleasant thing I have ever let a dentist do in my mouth.

Real bich of it was I needed a second crown.  No improvement of procedure.

No pain so thats not a factor, but it was almost like him trying to wiggle a softball around on my teeth and tongue.

Interesting topic. Last month I chatted with a woman in the eye doctor's waiting room in her 40's that had just finished the process of having all of her teeth removed and replaced with implants. She said it took about a year to let the swelling reduce, etc. after her removal process. She said it cost about $40,000 but was worth every penny to her. From my perspective, her new teeth looked good. I would not have known if she had not brought up the subject. Apparently, she had a lifelong problem with bad teeth and implants were the result.

If I could get coverage/funding/lottery money I would do about 8 implants as soon as the dentist could start things happening.

My dad had one done about 20+ or so years back at a facility in El Salvador.  He was with my sister and her hubby (state dept) at the embassy there.  They had a local dentist who went home after graduating from a state university dental school in the U.S.

He charged about $3-500 (IIRC) to put it in.  His first visit home he saw a friend DMD and had it checked.  He was told it was an excellent job and UVA dentist he consulted could do no better.

But for the political issues I would consider going there when mine are too far gone to keep.

See below if you are considering it.

This topic makes my stomach churn...I have always had a fear of the dental chair, thankfully, I've never had to have any work other than fillings in my elementary school days. If I were considering implants, I would research the material the implants are made out of, avoiding those blended with aluminum and nickel. I know someone with implants and they have worked well for her, hoping you have the same great results. As for the rest of us, keep the toothbrush/dental floss in your stack and BOB's. Also good to have clove essential oil in case of dental emergencies.

We have various tooth extraction tools in our medical kits.  An infected tooth can kill, just like a bullet.  Dead is dead.
