Explained - What is Disease X?
Get daily updates directly to your inbox

An unknown and deadly new illness dubbed Disease X has been added to the list of potential global epidemics that could kill millions.

Each year scientists with the World Health Organisation (WHO) create a list of the most likely diseases to break out into a worldwide pandemic.

This year, among the familiar Ebola, SARS, and Zika viruses is the new name of Disease X.

And unlike the other pathogens, it is not known what causes Disease X or how doctors could try to treat it.

Researchers said that they added Disease X to the threat list to recognise the fact that the next deadly pandemic could be started by an illness that has not caused any problems before.

The article is a bit sensationalist and gives the impression, that WHO knows of, and fears, a deadly pathogen thats out there but doesnt know enough about it yet.

This is not really whats going on here.

Adding Disease X to the list is simply an expression of a concept in Epidemiology to the effect of "I dont know what I dont know".

Meaning the name is a placeholder for what might happen.
Its an expression of the expectation that we may be in a similar situation the world was w/ regards to, for example, HIV in 1980.

It existed it had killed PPL.. it had  a reservoir but no one in disease surveillance had noticed it yet and the community would not notice it for several years to come.

This is a valid concept and it is possible, no, likely, that a as yet unknown disease has started circulating somewhere.
This expectation concept is expressed  by adding "Disease X" to the list.

It could be anything but we havent noticed it yet and may not know about it until its well established.

I think its a valid concept but it should not be misunderstood to mean "there is this disease we know of and we fear and we dont know enough about it yet"..

It means "we fear that there are always diseases out there in reservoirs that can cause an Epidemic or even pandemic, or that a future mutation of an existing pathogen can make it more deadly, but we have never heard of it yet, since no outbreak has yet occured and such would not yet show up on our disease surveillance radar."

I think this concept is useful and accurate and reflects my own thinking of the matter but most article on this that I have found are not very nuanced.

I read it and thought it was a-- "we gotta be careful because its out there but we ain't got it yet.  We think."

But I personally think we will get it.

WHO is giving a shout out to the boogeyman.  They're just covering their asses, because if something does occur; they can say, "Well we told you so!"  However, it is understood that humans are due for a major pandemic.  I just wonder if it'll be man-made or if it'll be naturally occurring.

It sounds to me like a "man made global warming" scare. Give me more money and I will fix it, this unknown and unproven disease. :sarcasm:

The series follows Mason Raines and a giant dog named Bowie, and also Mason's father Tanner and the President's daughter, Sam, as they pursue a variety of adventures after the country falls victim of a Superpox virus, which kills like 99% of the U.S. population.  Some people aren't killed by the virus and instead mutate.  There are a few pockets where civilization has survived, but they are far and few between.  Bradley generates a couple of books a year, and they contain various survival skills regarding starting fires, how to jump start a car, etc.  The books flow quickly, and they aren't challenging mentally, but they are entertaining.  The repartee between Tanner, an ex-convict, and Samantha is quite entertaining, and I'd say they are my favorite characters.  The dog, Bowie, is a heroic figure too.

I don't have Kindle but I'm slowly moving into the 21st century. Cell phone for my wife to be delivered tomorrow and Baofeng by the end of the week. I do prefer paper books.
