Hygiene, Oder and such

 If your living in a community or bugging in pretty soon it's going to smell like a toilet overflowed. City sewers will back up and septic systems that aren't gravity types will overflow. Even before it does it will stink. Fabreez to the rescue, also there's Poo-Pourri that you spraw in the toilet before hand.
 Mouse and rat traps will also be needed because the garbage will be hard to get rid of. OPSEC means you can't burn it and you can't dig a hole every day to bury it.
 Bug spray to kill insects especially desease carrying types and it goes with saying DEET to keep the bugs off. 
 If you have other ideas let us know.

Why would the sewers backup? Without anyone flushing toilets or showering, they'll probably dry up. Might smell due to everyone shitting in the yard though. That shouldn't last long though. No food=no shit.

Spot selected, Outhouse planned, all ready to go.  Backhoe to dig the hole ready to go.  Might run out of gas for it but got a couple shovels should that happen.

The first step is to not mix urine and feces.  That alone will greatly reduced odor output. 

Y'all should seriously look into building or buying a composting toilet.  The urine will still have to be disposed of somewhere, but the feces will completely neutralize itself if temperatures are kept above 50°F (the higher the faster.)  Preferably one with a fan drawn vent.  A small solar panel and old car battery should provide enough power for around the clock negative pressure on the receptacle.

We use a composting toilet, pee goes out a hose and about 50 yards down the hill, poo goes into a hollow stump.

Three years now and no problems.

Good thread JoJo, thanks for bringing it up.

A few tips if you are going to dig an outhouse:

1) Nemo is right, have a few shovels and picks on hand.
2) I have used pallets to line the pit dug for the outhouse.
3) Plan the outhouse (s) down wind (Yearly Average wind) and away from potential drinking water. Remember water flows down e.g. gravity. An old
    Marine Captain that was in charge of logistics once told me that the most important thing in any gathering of Marines of two or more was proper
    bodily waste handling. Second was clean water.
4) Here is a great site to down load plans. Remember to
    build your outhouse on skids to make moving an easy chore.
5) Buy an extra toilet seat at Home Depot when they are on sale and store them away for a rainy day.
6) While at Home Depot buy some 6" chimney or pvc pipe. The best outhouses use airflow (Hence chimney) to help breakdown waste.

On another note: Composting toilets are GREAT but may not be able to handle the volume from a large family or group. If you have access to electricity (240 Volt is best) check out my review of the Incinolet Toilet awhile back.

It's amazing where it all goes, the "dump stump" is only about 2' in diameter and 18" high and hollowed out. All the porta potti and eco dunny output goes in the top and I reckon after all this time it's still only 6" deep. It just composts away I suppose. You would walk right passed the stump and not know unless I pointed it out.

So unless you have 10 people and no land I think sewage is not a problem, it's not even on my prepper radar as something to deal with. That's in a warm/hot climate, YMMV in the cold.

The reason it will back up is every toilet will have at least 1 1/2 flush's of water in them. When the power goes out the pumps that move the sludge to the processing center will not be working. Besides people will still be putting thier human waste in the toilet. If you have a septic that requires a pump to move the fluids to the leaching field then like me will be S**t out of luck

A few things to think about are:

1) If your toilet is on a city run sewage program, for the most part you are screwed. Think composting toilet.

2) If you are on your own septic system you have many options
> You can flush by using buckets of water
> You can run your pump to the leech field from your septic tank once a day using 12 volt turned to 120 volt using a inverter or using 12 volt pumps.
    The next time you have your septic tank pumped, have them install 12 volt pumps.
> If you are planning on using your generator a couple of times a week to charge things, washing clothes, etc.; You can also pump your waste water
   into the leach field.

In short #2 is our plan. With that written we have also planned a outhouse which will be used as our main toilet in a grid down SHTF situation.

3/4 of houses I have owned have septic tank setups.  None needed a pump for ops.  All were designed to operated on gravity and flushing/water input/flow.

Make sure thats done and it works proper and you are in high cotton.

You are correct Nemo however, post 2005 many states are requiring a more contained septic system's.

In short, basically all deposits are contained in a sealed container and ONLY water is sent to the leaching field. Up at the redoubt, we had to get one of the EPA newly designed/approved septic systems ala 120 volt pump.

Now our neighbor has a gravity flow system that you write to. There system seems to back up at least once a year with the entry pipe (s) get clogged. Simple to clear but a nasty job.

On another note: I am getting ready to put in a washing machine. The outflow will NOT go into the septic system. It will go out to a run-off ditch. If I had to do it over again (Still may do it) I would have the shower/bath tub go off to this ditch too. Water with the wrong soap can upset your septic micro balance.

JohnyMac like you I have a 120v pump but because my property is almost all clay I have a system you would swear Rube Goldburg designed. It has three tanks an alarm system and two leaching fields. One is 80 feet long and the other is 160 feet long. If SHTF (pun intended) I can build an outhouse over the sludge collection tank and a urnal over one of the other two.
