Bad Knee's
« on: August 29, 2011, 04:58:56 AM »
A few years ago I injured my knee and had exploratory surgery on it. When they did the surgery they ground something down because it was inflamed, I forgot what it was. Long story short, I lost most of the muscle mass in my knee and leg and it has bothered me ever since. Obviously this hinders my training and would be a huge problem if the SHTF. I can walk not run but walk about a half mile maybe 3/4 if that before it starts to feel like someones jamming a knife between the joint. Sometimes its fine when I'm not doing much other times I wake up and it feels like, I don't know finely broken glass or sand in the joint is the best way to describe it. Anyone have any tips or advice?

The knee is a very complicated joint, involving four bones, femur (upper leg), tibia and fibula (lower leg bones), and patella (knee cap), numerous ligaments which connect the bones to one another, and two meniscus, which are firm pieces of connective tissue which serve as shock absorbers. Like all joints there are multiple bursa (small pockets of fluid) surrounding the joint, and numberous tendons which connect the muscles to the bones. Damage to any of these structures can cause problems. It is difficult to be know what is wrong with your knee without examining it.   You should probably see a doctor for evaluation and treatment.  Sorry, I can't tell you more.

Hey Crooked,

You know I am not a medical professional but I got something you might want to try. Take the free weights you would use to curl and do one legged squats. Even if you lost some of the muscle connections you can still strenghten what you have.

I've been to several doctors, specialists, physical therapists and they all say the same thing either they don't know whats wrong or there's nothing wrong and I'm just trying to get meds. Honestly at this point if I could afford it I'd get it replaced. My health insurance kicks in in December so I'll get it checked out again, probably just end up with more Vicodin.

Thatguy, I'll try it thanks, and Reaver fuck you just in case ;D

Crooked : i'm gonna share a bit of personal history but maybe it will give you some encouragement.  In 2007 i was medically discharged from the Marine corp. i had to have re construction surgery on both knees and had to have two pins perminatly into my hip for the rest of my life.

i was told i  will never walk again and if i do it wll be with a walker. i told the doc's" kiss my ass !!!, i will be running again....i came home in a wheelchair. after 6 months of therapy i was able to walk again.after a year and a half, i was able to jog. ... last month i was able to run back down the aisle with my wife on our way to the honeymoon. last week i had to go in front of a board of  military doctors. i told them i am fit for duty..." they looked at me like i had a arm growing out of my skull..

.. i did a bunch of exercise in front of them, they took xrays to make sure.. then i  got a call today " you can reinlist if you want. " ...today i got a call from the army.. i have to drop 3 percent body fat and i can go down and sign my contract. i get to be a solider like my father, brothers, uncles, grandparents, great-grandparents and so on.

in the mater of a month  have gone from being a couch potato to doing pt 3 times a day... granted i am in pain when i do these things. but the pain is going away and i am returning to my former self.   " without pain, there is no reward." my father always told me this. i have never worked so hard. i can say not only will i be able to walk my daughter down the aisle but i will do it wearing a dress army uniform...

i hope this my give you some encouragement

Thanks UnBroken and good luck. I try to push through the pain as best I can but don't want to do any more damage. I guess I'll see what the docs have to say in a few months.
