Unchained Preppers

Yes, we all heard that major phone systems were down this morning across the country in major metropolitan cities. To me, this is a big yawn and "no Shit Sherlock" moment post from me.
At a recent ham radio meeting, I asked the members present 29 in total, "raise your hand if you have 30-days worth of food & water on hand". Three folks raised their hand which included me.
All the others present who didn't raise their hands, squirmed in their seats or looked down at their dinner plate nervously.
I moved on as I could see that no more preaching would move anybody off the mark. Few folks other than the ones here get it. Throughout millennia, tyrants have used food as a tool to control the populous. WAKE THE FUCK UP AMERICA! :suicide:
Rant over...

Johny... Was it Land Lines and Cellular or just Cellular?
-
Yes and no.
Cell phones (Digital) were down for about one hour.
Landlines, local worked fine but calling out of your exchange, they were having problems too. Remember, in all cases but local exchanges, are digital now.
Hope that answers your question.

I work in Endicott NY. No cell service on ATT from approx 0745 to 1230 at least. I'm home now and on Wifi, so no idea if its back up

I'm seeing reports that the outages are still occurring in certain areas.
Johny, I can sympathize with you regarding preparedness. At a recent MAG meeting it was evident that most didn't have the basics. I'm to the point where I'm losing interest in helping others, and I'll just concentrate on my immediate friends and family.
The local MAG leadership are advocating that members should purchase a Baofeng portable. However, there's no communications plan, and no mention of how to power the radios once the grid goes down. There's nothing like giving folks false hopes.

I can relate to your frustration, almost my entire family are non believers of the SHTF kind. People living in their 3000 sf opaque bubble will only be concerned about when their services will be restored. I do feel that more people are waking up, but is it' too for the masses?

We didnt have any issues up here, that I know of. But I figure this was a test run and the real thing will happen around election time

It is "too late" for the masses. Only extreme changes of course, and radical reallocations of expenditures can make much difference for those who see the party and come to join it at this late date. Mindset alone takes time to develop and mature enough to prevent shock.
Better late than never? Sure.
However.
Numerically, statistically, our biggest problem remains - some of us in more isolated locations perhaps having it easier - but _nobody_ will escape this one completely: lifeboat capacity.
Lifeboat filled to capacity, those in it have a shot at surviving.
Overfill and swamp the lifeboat, everybody dies.
As dedicated, thinking, captains of our own little lifeboats... the threat most existential to our souls and bodily continuance is minding the lifeboat capacity.
May God help us. And forgive us.

aaaaand, I have very little room in my lifeboat.

Phones??? Who cares about phones? I woke up today to see the alarm clock blinking. Our Power was out for 3 solid hours. I'm wondering if the recent X class solar flare had anything to do with the Cell towers and my Power outage. Normally, when I'm out and about, my GPS will occasionally drop out and lose the satellite signal. Today I went to town and back and lost the satellite signal at least 5 times.

So NOW we know what happened to phone service...
