A Polish ?migr? in my neighborhood is all for driving Russia our of Ukraine - he harbors a visceral distrust/hatred of Russians. And in view of history he and family in living memory have lived, this is understandable.
What he does not appreciate is the Russian viewpoint that includes (also in "living memory") two invasions that crossed the Ukrainian lands, Napoleon and Hitler. Russia's capital does not enjoy much buffer of distance from Ukraine's border.
When Kruschev started placing nuclear-capable missiles in Cuba, Americans obviously felt that was too close for comfort. And when we kept advancing NATO towards Russian borders, I wouldn't be surprised if the Russians felt threatened.
Plenty of emotional fuel based on historical calculation.
And even more fuel having nothing to do with history except that in the making.
Our cabal of "elites" actually think they can shape everything, even tickle the nuclear dragon's tail without fatal consequences. Will we be lucky, will they slip safely past this game of Armageddon chicken?
