I've written this one up for a 50+ guy.
Learning to Torrent in 8 Easy Steps1st - Download the BitTorrent program (It's the one I use) fuck Norton it's safe.
http://www.bittorrent.com/Note: some Anti Virus developers are paid to see certain software (cracks / torrent programs) as harmful because of they are reduce profits from other companies .
Note: A Torrent site doesn't actually have the data you want, It's just a collection of “Get this here”direction signs.
2nd - Go to the most user friendly torrent site: The Pirate Bay at:
http://thepiratebay.se/ Due to it's outside of the legal framework role it is often targeted and it's IP address is shut down until their army of lawyers get's it returned, or moves it's self to an other Address.
There are other Torrent sites but they are not as user friendly and slightly less secure. such as:
http://kickass.to/.3rd - Search for the data you want. (There's a lot) so beware or you'll might end up with a dubbed Indian version of the blues brothers.
Also due to it's legal & free status the site tends to have some pretty bottom of the barrel unsavory advertizing NSFW (like a real pirate bay!
)
A popup blocker is helpful although they don't do anything too intrusive like a chain of windows.
4th -A torrent's download speed also known as "strength" is derived from the amount of people that are "Seeding" {SE} (sending data) and those like yourself who are "Leaching" {LE} (receiving data).
A torrent that has {SE 1000} & {LE 200} is a healthy torrent and you should be able to download that in good time.
While a torrent has {SE 6} & {LE 500} Is not strong enough yet, prepare to wait the better part of a day.
5th - Find your healthy Torrent click on the link and See whether the specifics are to your liking. If they are, click the link: {Get Torrent} and your BitTorrent program should react with the site and start up on it's own or. if not pick it from the list of available programs.
Note: Other sites can do this differently by downloading a file, which you then open with BitTorrent.
6th - A second window will load in your program (this might take a sec) in it will be a check list of everything that's in that torrent. Un-check anything you don't want or find suspicious. Then click {OK}.
Note: A list of file extensions should be helpful with that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_formats_%28alphabetical%29In short you want files that end in extensions such as: .AVI or .JPG and not .EXE or .RAR
7th -You will then see your torrent downloading and your {ETA} (how long until it's done) also the speed at which you are uploading that same data "seeding"
Once done you can leave your program on and let it continue seeding that torrent. (this is how you got it to begin with) so it's kind of an internet courtesy thing. You can also close the window and it will continue to run in the back ground unaffected.
8th - Once you don't want it any more, right click the Torrent select {Remove Torrent + Data} and everything is gone.
Any questions just ask.
