Title: KEVLAR checking in from Central NC
Post by: KEVLAR on January 14, 2025, 08:32:37 PM
Hello everyone,

I'm Lifelong hunter, angler and outdoorsman from NC. Also a RSO for a great friend that puts on firearms training locally, so I'm out on the flat range a good amount. Have taken a fair amount of classes in firearms and medical. Recently I've taken it upon myself to become the COMMS guy in my small group of friends with similar interests. Currently I hold a tech license in the Ham world, but working on my general as we speak. I've signed up for a NVIS class with Historian from Brushbeater forum. I signed up on this forum due to Net that's running Tuesdays and hope to participate sooner than later. Tonight while running my G90 with a terrible antenna setup (my 4:1 balun has seemed to gone AWOL since my last hunting trip) I was able to hear parts of the Net. I recognize I have a ton to learn in the radio realm, but I'm enjoying processes thus far.

Welcome KEVLAR to UP.

Once you get your General, you can do the ERIN digital and or voice net Tuesday nights.

Also, since you have a G90, and a tech 10M is open and you can play. easy to make a 10M dipole antenna if you do not already have one.  Have each leg be about 8' 3" long and you will be styling.

Any how, welcome Brother.

Welcome Kevlar, from another radio guy in middle Tennessee.  I?m still learning, after being a ham for nearly 50 years.

Welcome to the group KEVLAR. I'm in Virginia about 33 miles north of the NC state line. Get that General ticket and join the Net.

That's the plan! I listened last night, but man it was very hard to hear anything. I saw your post on the thread and I guess the band wasn't cooperating very well. I'm still trying to get my G90 all setup to listen to digital modes.

Welcome to the site, Kevlar.  I'm a neighbor to the north, in Virginia.  You are wise to look into building your radio skills.  This is a helpful group for that.  Our Tuesday night nets are quite useful for information gathering; no internet needed as demonstrated in Western NC util the Starlink terminals could be brought in and powered up.

Thanks everyone! Happy to be here. I've been playing around with my G-90 trying to get everything setup for next Tuesday, hopefully by then I'll be able to listen in. I gotta break myself away from playing with the radio and get my license upgraded to general.

I'll also be digging through some of the threads on here in the meantime, so you my see me respond to an older thread.

I'm planning a trip to that area in May! Got any recommendation for the wife and I to check out?

D-Day memorial.   https://www.dday.org/ (https://www.dday.org/)

Up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and a drive or walk (hike? climb? trek? depending) up Sharptop would be a good afternoon.  Its next to Flattop.  See them and you will understand how they got the names.  Rather simple just thinking about it also.  They are right at the  Parkway Peaks of Otter visitor center.  Stop there also.

The Bedford Boys memorial.  https://www.bbtcva.org (https://www.bbtcva.org)

20 enlistees on the same landing craft on D-Day did not get off the Dog Green Sector of Omaha beach. All from a small town of 3200 residents.  Small thing in downtown Bedford.  Spend about an hour or 2, maybe.

Those are the first 3 to come to mind.
