Title: Zello Voice Nets
Post by: patriotman on July 23, 2019, 12:04:05 PM
Zello is a free walkie talkie app available on the computer and on mobile devices. A few of us were kicking around the idea of creating a UP channel and running monthly nets on it like we do on HF. This would allow non Hams to participate and get the feel for a net for when they do get the license. It would also be another tool in the tool box for us when it comes to staying in touch.

I would never consider it secure comms, but could be useful during nets to call out frequency changes as well.

Any interest in doing this?

I'm interested, as it's another form of communications.  In a SHTF event, would Zello work better than cellphones?  Seeing it's an IP based communications method, I'm thinking it might connect when cellphones won't.  I understand a lot of emergency services folks are using it.

For whatever time period it is available, I suppose it would or could be useful. However, when the SHTF I don't think the internet will be available due to nobody will have any money to pay for it or the lack of electricity for it to operate. My total dependence will be on radio in one form or another and they will have to be 12 volt DC compatible.

Has anyone used the FireChat app? It supposedly allows point-to point communications through smart phones using a mesh network topology over bluetooth, or wifi. Distance will depend on how many other users are running the app and how many there are.
I've had it on my phone for a year or so after reading about it in a novel on SHTF.

I use a 'discord' server for some meetings.

Zello is quite big here in the Southern side of Africa.
Our communities have channels we monitor with all the SHTF this side.
every person who joins needs to give admins certain details to be verified before they are just let in.
It helped us weed out some unwanted ears over the last while.
Useful when you are covering entire communities.
Yes it uses a lot of data and ours is expensive but for the bigger part during riots or emergencies it has proven its weight in gold this side.

Definite green light when used right.

Hope all is well with everyone across the big blue.

Kind regards
RM

Great to hear from ya' RM!  :dancingBanana:

I am game to use Zello. I would recommend we start with normal communication and then move to using it with a Brevity code.

Thanks for the feedback, all. I will creat the channel and write up some basic instructions in the next week or so.

Remember 4th grade?  Make those instructions at that level.

It’ll be handy for me with I’m going to be doing for the next 12 months. I used it during Hurricane Florence. It works well. But you need to make sure people know proper radio etiquette. The Preppernet/Cajun Navy folks did not.

Good point Mech.

Hey JMac, perhaps that would be a useful forum/AP post - radio etiquette and perhaps even how to run a net so that people have the knowledge to run a local net, even on FRS, if SHTF. Thoughts?

For someone as inexperienced, unknowing and on these things-- dumb as I am-- that would be a most excellent idea.

Just a microphone and speakers or a headset with a mic.

Given the current situation, is anyone interested in participating in a voice net for Zello?

I would be interested too.  I've got Zello on my Ipad, I've yet to use it.

Again, I am 100% game.

I have zello on my phone but have deactivated it for the time being. Mr. Patriotman started up awhile back and would be willing to turn it back on when given the password.  ;D

With that written, I will be deactivating it if things get frosty. Zello follows your location not unlike Google does when you activate Google Map and other apps.
