ROANOKE, VA (WDBJ7) - The last total lunar eclipse until May 2021 is set to occur over North America the night of January 21st.

The total lunar eclipse will be visible for just North and South America and will provide a great viewing for areas like Virginia.

Depending on the amount of dust in the atmosphere, the moon should display a brilliant red hue. Visibility will depend on cloud coverage.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth, and moon perfectly align so that the earth casts a complete shadow over the moon. Sunlight gets scattered or blocked around the earth and creates a ring of light around the moon during the eclipse.

The January 21st-22nd total lunar eclipse will be visible for 1 hour and 2 minutes. Here is a break-down of the eclipse:

9:36 PM - Penumbral Eclipse begins
10:33 PM - Partial Eclipse begins
11:41 PM - Total Eclipse begins
12:12 AM - Maximum Eclipse
12:43 AM - Total Eclipse ends
1:50 AM - Partial Eclipse ends
2:48 AM - Penumbral Eclipse ends

No special equipment will be needed to view the eclipse. Just look up into the sky and you'll see it as it occurs! Telescopes or binoculars could let you see closer details of the moon.
If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.
