Primitive shoot
« on: February 03, 2019, 12:29:01 PM »
I've been trying to become more proficient at the atlatl and other primitive skills, I didnt build a bow there but I am building a hickory bow. But it's a great way to sharpen bow shooting skills.

Every skill is important especially when SHTF. Keep practicing.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

Grizz.... There's a really easy way to build a bow that that is really hard to break. Get a couple of PVC tubes with a 1/4" inside diameter and a couple of 1/4" diameter fiberglass rods about 6 feet long and slide the rods into the PVC pipe. Tape two of these together and then cut a third piece of PVC pipe about 18" to 24" and tape it to the center section. Then wrap the entire thing with CAMO Duct tape. Then you'll have about a 35 to 40 lb bow. Then use parachord or a real bow string to string it up. Its good out to about 50 feet to the target. I built one and it works great. Go to the sporting goods store and buy some real arrows because home brew arrows really suck unless you are good at making them. Unless you plan to rest the arrow on your hand when shooting it, I added a little extra piece to hold the arrow and also marked the bowstring at the midpoint. Carry some extra paracord with you because it won't take long to break the paracord bowstring. If you want a really heavy draw weight, you can tape 3 of those PVC tubes with fiberglass rods together and get more range. The tips of the bow is not going to cooperate so I drilled a small hole through the two PVC tubes about a 1/2 inch down from the ends and that created a good place to attach the bow string loop. I push the bowstring in between the two tubes and flip the end loop over the top. I string it up the same way you string a regular bow by placing the bottom on the ground and stepping through and between the bow and bow string and bend the bow until I can slip the bow string over the end of the bow. Then remove my leg and I'm ready to shoot. If you've never done a lot of bow shooting, you should carry about 8,000 arrows with you because you will be losing them left and right.

I used to own a traditional archery business, I made pretty good arrows but never mastered the bows. I did make some nice atlatls though

Before I got divorced I had a chocolate lab that had a knack for finding my arrows. He would mosey down behind the target, sniff around and gently pick them up and bring them back to me, he was a GOOD BOY!!
