Title: Oh, Crap!!!!! Keep your eye on the economy
Post by: pkveazey on January 04, 2019, 04:09:13 PM
While I keep an eye peeled for just about anything that will create chaos, I particularly watch the Economy. The Stock market is just plain nuts these days and the Gurus say to be aware of it but to keep a closer eye on the Bond Market as an indicator. A short term Bond should yield a low interest rate and a long term Bond should yield a much larger interest rate. Hmmmmmmm..... All the Bonds are yielding less than 3%. That's what they call a Flat Yield Curve. Yes, that would be a very bad thing. If the short term Bonds yield more interest than the long term Bonds, then you're screwed because that's called a Reversed Yield Curve. Somebody knows something and they are trying to keep the Great Unwashed from finding out. Silver and gold just jumped up. Silver went up over $1 an oz. and Gold went up about $80 an oz. Fluctuations are very common because of metal market manipulation but this time the hairs on the back of my neck are starting to stand up. As soon as my Silver and Gold dealer opened up after his Christmas/New Year break, I ran right out and grabbed 11 more ounces of Silver. I am not one of those Henny Penny types that goes off at the drop of a hat, but this time, I really think something really bad is going to happen in the next several months. Don't bend over unless you look behind you first.

On the silver-- do you stick with Silver Eagles or  ?  Do you go with junk silver coinage?

I am interested in getting some half ounce or such in silver but Eagles don't come that way.  Or don't come that where I can find them.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?

I personally have junk silver because it is recognizable, easy to obtain, and divisible so change can be made.

I buy .999 fine Silver in Rounds mostly. I like Silver Eagles but when they charge you extra for them I leave them alone. I don't buy any Junk Silver. However, When I find one in my pocket change, it goes into a special coin box just for Junk Silver. My Silver dealer sometimes offers a buy one round and then I can buy one Silver Eagle for the same price. I have a bunch of Silver Eagles that I bought that way. As for the partial ounces, I would buy some of those but the price per ounce is too much. My Silver dealer offers 1/10th ounces but 10 of those cost way more than 1 ounce. If I need to buy something that cost me 1/2 oz, I have a scale and a hammer and chisel to take care of that situation.

We have a mix of junk silver and Silver Eagles.  We went with them because they're both recognizable.  Silver rounds may not be easily recognizable, therefore not easily exchanged.  However, I've been considering purchasing some 10 oz silver ingots since the price of silver has been so low.  This has been a great time to purchase both silver and gold.

All good stuff gents. Just remember that junk silver is for daily needs purchases. 1-ounce silver rounds or ingots are for obviously larger purchases while 1-ounce gold coins and ingots are for large purchases like: House, land, draft horse, etc.

Buy your PM's appropriately to maximize your purchases during a barter type drama.

While i own a number of rounds, mostly Walking Liberties (since they look so similar to Silver Eagles which I suspect may help acceptance Post-Apoc) and Silver Buffaloes (done by a state mint and also a bit "historical" which I also feel will help acceptance by laymen Post-Apoc), I just bought quantity of maple leafs last nite.

Actually the last 3 buys I made of Silver were Maple leafs.

Why?

1) They are a Coin. While I like rounds for the value in some jurisdictions dealers cannot take your bullion silver unless its a coin w/o a big delay and hassle.. so they dont do it.
Fairfax County , VA is such a jurisdiction. I found this out when I had to sell come Silver Buffaloes last year and "my guy" had stopped taking rounds. So it being a coin has some advantage.

2) While a round depending on, quantity bought and wellknownness (is that even a word) of its brand, may command on average 1 dollar over spot (yes w/ sales it can be 85 cents... still aprox a buck)) and a Silver Eagle almost 3 dollars over spot , a Maple leaf usually commands a little under 2 dollars over spot. (Again assuming some reasonable but not large quantity bought). So the Silver Eagle to me is a bit too much premium over a round but I tolerate the premium of the Maple Leaf which is on average only half the "extra' more over a round a Silver Eagle is.

So the price difference to a round is not that big..  but it will have improved acceptance among some, over a round and probably will be nearly as a well accepted as Silver Eagles.

3) They also have a face value of 5 Canadian Dollars and are legal tender in Canada.. so even if something crazy happens with the Silver market you always have that face value to fall back on as a value "floor".
So you can view Maple Leafs as Bullion investment or post-apoc trade items.. Or as canadian currency. Hell will freeze over before any canadian currency is declared illegal in this country.

4) It is 99.99% pure silver or 0.9999 Silver. Rounds and other coins , that I am aware of are only "3 nines"... 0.999 or 99.9% pure. Even the Silver Eagle is "only" 99.9 % Silver.

So this is why my buying habits are what they are.
Just my 2 cents :)

PS: I have a new job which keeps me on the road a lot..bad for prepping but good for resourcing.. So I collect my daily per diems $$ and put it into silver whenever practical.
PS2: This is also the reason I have been posting a lot less.. My apologies.... JohnyMac if u ever see a thread u want my input on please email me as otherwise I might miss it.

 :lmfao:
been a hobby of mine since i lived in Hawaii.
the beaches and parks were a good place to find lost jewelry.  The coolest coin i ever found was working on a road side, looking for a tool - a post colonial large cent.
-
when tallied, I don't think i've ever paid off the cost of batteries. This is as a sometimes weekend warrior.
-
best way i have found junk silver was while working at an arcade.  the coin counters would make a ringing sound rather than a click when counting silver coins at the end of a shift.  i would glean them out and pay face value for them out of my own pocket.
the other way i have found junk silver, was to get a bag half dollars a couple of times a year.  I live somewhat close to some casinos.  i would pull out the silvers and send the rest back.  the pickings tailed off in the 90's, though.

I have a metal detector but haven't used it to find Silver or Gold. I keep one handy just in case I need one.

Seems to me Hawaii would be a gold mine for lost jewelry

I'm thinking of getting one to supplement my income a little. We have countless tourist every summer and I've yet to see anyone MDing. I met one guy selling his rig but he is more of a relic hunter who digs mostly away from areas Id be digging.

Bought some more Silver last week. Even though price is a dollar/ounce higher than a few weeks ago still historically low compared to recent years.

Keep a sharp eye out on the economy in the next 12 months for effects as the result of Brexit.

The financial sector is one of the largest exports for England. Mainly due to the access it gives to the EU.

A no deal Brexit is very likely going to have negative effects on that sector and is likely to cause negative effects elsewhere.

Cheers

Speaking of junk silver I have a question. What type of coins are in the bag? Are they quarters, dimes and half dollars?

typically, in the US of A, coins minted before 1965. dimes, half dollars and quarters.  they are often sold by weight or quantity by face value.
