Title: New YT Vid Thread.
Post by: Reaver on March 04, 2012, 02:29:32 PM
Was thinking...
Why start a new subject for your new vids? Why not just make a thread that every one that IS a part of Straightprep can post their newest video's.

I dunno shoot down the idea if you don't like it.

Here's mine.

good idea.

as far as the video id say dont zero from the bench...id also go so far as to say NEVER shoot from a bench. i prefer the dirt personally. zeroing from the bench may create a wierd zero that can only be recreated in that position... it may not in some cases with lighter recoil rifles but just sayin.

I hope im not coming off as a know it all.. i just like to force my opinions on others lol.

Where do y'all want it...."Weapons," "General Discussion," "Gear Review," or somewhere else?
And what do you want to call it?

Why move it.

Mass media is good place for us to drop our new vids and the threads already started.

Kenny, I would take your advise but I'm not going to shoot it offhand & the range fags
( government type run around in a green 4x4 )
Will be all over that ass if you try and shoot prone.  :-\

But remember gents I'm an AK guy at heart so Minute of man is good enough answer for me.  [url=http://yoursmiles.org/p-m

Maybe a separate section just for the videos, then just go in post the title and video up. That was we arent dumping alot of videos on top of one another and if someone new wants to see if we have a video on a certain subject they can look in the video section. Just a thought.

Ken, I think your suggestion concerning using the bench is right on concerning sighting in your rifle.

I sighted in a 42" .54 cal. BP rifle using a bench. I was getting nice clover leaf at 50 yards. Then I started shooting the rifle sitting, prone and off hand. I got different groups with each position. Not much but different.

I was getting frustrated and one of the range officers at the club told me that where you place the bag or your hand on the barrel can affect "harmonics."

His position was that I had nice groups at each position so just take that in mind when shooting at one of those positions.

Now with that said, I  can bench sight in a .22 and she will hit right where I point her at any position. Mmmmmmm?

yep that sounds about right. the reason is the muzzle is able to flip up more when in one position compared to another... off hand the group will likely land higher then it would in the prone position (not always but it will be moving somewhere cmore then likely) because the guns able to push the shooter backwards more when shooting off hand. this is why i dont think zeroing a rifle off a bench is such a good idea if your looking for fine precision. your shooting from a position you may never actually shoot from in the real world.

but like you experienced with the .22 theres not enough recoil there to make any significant change from one position to another.

same thing happens when shooting prone, if you load the bipod on one shot and then dont load the bipod on the next shot. the second shot will likely fly high. and the same maybso with a bag under the front of the rifle to act as a bipod... where it is under the rifle will affect the shot aswell.

With harmonics you deffinatly dont want anything touching the barrel, Stock, Hand etc should all stay clear of the barrel. the only thing the barrel should be touching is the action its threaded into if optimal precision is the goal.

Here is my newest uploaded youtube video, it shows us shooting the AK that we built, we took it out the gun range, and it was amazingly accurate and functioned perfectly.  It was completely awesome.  This is one accurate AK, its sweet!

AK Build Gun Range (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omnBGD59Ww0#ws)

Of course, we were in the primary, all day long, slaying bodies, and we brought the M4 and the R700 as well.  Good to go?

Don't forget to Sub, and I'll sub you back, add me as a friend, and of course, hit the ads so I can get that scrilla!  (money)  LOL

You think if your flag was facing the right way or it wasn't all tattered and torn they would have acted the same?

facing the right way, I'm really not worried about. I've gone out of my way to hang a flag... inside my shed even, where only myself and a select other few can see it. honestly, I'm really not worried about technicalities like that. I'm sorry to come back so harsh but it's just something that's always irked me. people freaking out about the orientation of the flag. for example, one day I cut my front lawn and whenever I do I need to remove the little yard-light (on a light sensor so it comes on automatically at dusk) that shines on the 3x5 flag that flies on the pole that I stuck in the ground in my yard. I took the time and sweat to dig a hole, buy some concrete, mix the concrete, stick the pole in the concrete, make sure it was level, and check it every 20 minutes or so to make sure it was still level and hadn't drifted off to one side. eventually the concrete was solid enough where I didn't have to worry about it anymore. dry, finally.

anyway, so I forgot to put the little light back after I cut the grass.

now, all that being said, you know some FUCKING ASSHOLE has the nerve to knock on my motherfucking door and preach to me about proper flag display practice!!!!!!! (for not having a light shining on it after dark). I asked this piece of shit where he lives and he pointed a few doors down and the fucking asshole didn't even have a fucking flag at all.

also, I think it was the old L&L site, or maybe it was right here on SP, I can't remember, but it was when I first put up that flag pole. I posted something about it, and one of the members has the nerve to fuck with me BECAUSE I SET THE POLE IN CONCRETE INSTEAD OF GRAVEL...... fucking ridiculous.

here's how I look at it: you love your country? *yea*... is that what you're trying to portray here with this flag? *yea*.... good job. carry on.

and as for the condition of the flag itself:

So your ok with improper display of the most important symbol in history?

I was always taught that if you " kept your pennies in line the dollars would look after themselves "

I guess I'm just not the type of person to do the wrong thing on purpose or because I was to lazy or ignorant to do it the right way.

Thanks for the negative karma on doing the right thing BTW  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

no problem. i know i came back a bit harsh with my response, but like I said it's just something that's bothered me for a while now. I feel like I've gone out of my way to display my patriotism, far more than most these days, and instead of people feeling proud to see a young feller like myself displaying his patriotism, all I ever get is criticism for displaying it "improperly".

Title: Re: New YT Vid Thread.
Post by: Reaver on May 28, 2012, 05:34:15 PM
But with showing patriotism you should want to display it properly right? That's how I feel, hell when I do anything I want to do it right. To the smallest detail.

Title: Re: New YT Vid Thread.

Where as in location?
Or Where as in lack there of?

If the later, I filled up 12G of memory and didn't even get any real shooting
recorded, unfortunately. Most of the stuff was vehicle maneuvers anyway.

This is just the video I personally took. There where "professional" videographers there
and most of the shooting you see is just for them. We're just shooting dirt over and over
so they could get their shots. We did the same maneuvers for 4 hours, over and over so they
could get the angles they wanted.-  :o

Hey Technique, why where you all standing behind the trucks like if nothing was happening?
You can see the same both in the front and back truck.

Shouldn't you try to use wheel's axis or at least the engine block to get some cover?

Not sure what you're referring to. The only guy standing around is the instructor.
Everyone else is behind an axle or engine, minus the guy with PKM.

Maybe is just the camera angle
Title: Re: New YT Vid Thread.
Post by: technique on June 08, 2012, 11:42:28 AM
Probly the angle on the two towards the engine, they are at the engine block.
But, When 5 guys bail from one vehicle there's only so much false cover to run to.

The third gentlemen you "arrowed" spent several years in group, he's on the up and up
when it comes to gun fights and he's obviously never lost one. You'd have to ask him
why he stands there. My guess, as mentioned, anything behind that vehicle is just soft cover.

Like I said, it wasn't a class or a real training session- it was for video.
That portion was taken with my iPhone, the front vehicle was where the real
cameras were, everyone else is just making noise.

The DOD/State Dept. trainers brought in former students to help them make it.
99% of everyone there is or was Group/Team/Ranger/DOD/State. Not a noob in sight.

EJR,

I've always been interested in reducing my load but one day it struck me as I was putting my pot and stove back into my backpack, "Why can't I make things smaller too?"

I had seen pots that nested with a 1qt. Nalgene bottle (http://store.nalgene.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=3) and thought that would be a great start. Almost every backpack ever made has a pocket that fits a Nalgene bottle so it was a no brainer that the pot could ride in that pocket without adding anything in the way of volume. I ended up at REI (http://www.rei.com/) stuffing bottles into pots. I like some more than others and ended up settling on the GSI Halulite Minimalist (http://www.gsioutdoors.com/products/pdp/halulite_minimalist/). I really like the cozy that came with it and how it turned into a coffee cup too. One less piece of gear to carry!

The next challenge was the stove... I got thinking about how I keep my 'get home' bag in my truck and how heated I would be if it got stolen with one of my nice stoves in it. I've had a bad run of luck with buying backpacking stoves when they are new to the market and most expencive. I couldn't figure out how much fuel to take with me either. From work it's around 20 mile home and 50-60 miles from the big city. So anywhere from one day of pushing hard to a week of keeping my eyes open. At the time I was thinking that I would have to boil all my water too. I solved that problem by throwing a chunk of pool shock into a 2oz bottle to make bleach out of but I still didn't know how much or little fuel I would need for a stove that I really didn't want to live in my truck bag anyhow.

I had seen the Emberlit Stove (http://www.emberlit.com/) and the  Honey Stove (http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/product397.asp). While I agree with the Gents at ITSTactical (http://www.itstactical.com/gear/honey-stove-the-bees-knees-of-backpacking-stoves/) that the Honey Stove really is the Bee's knees I couldn't justify the cost... I was right back where I started.

Until I pulled up my man panties and desided that I could make my own. I tried to make one out of some 30gauge aluminum flashing that I had laying around thinking that it could fit between the pot and the bottle.. who would have guessed that it couldn't stand the heat.

I was in a store again but this time I was stuffing pots into things and found that a 4" take off duct fit just right.

That led to the Multi-fuel Stove (http://straightprep.com/forum/index.php?topic=2038.0/) but while working on making more I got tired of pulling my layout over a round idem and ended up at the hardware store again. A 4" stove pipe clicks together and can be laid flat for layout and what not. So that is where I am at now...

Yeah bolt hung up on the trigger group, never a problem until I cleaned it and clped everything, no more of that shit on real gun oil or 30 weight in it from now on.

lubing your rifle, yeah thats the issue.....

nah rifle sat for a while and the clp seemed to evaporate or cook off in the little bit of shooting it was way dry. Of course I was pretty blasted when I cleaned it so there is a chance i neglected to oil the FCG.

Thanks everyone and TG.  Yeah, we had much more malfuctions out of our M4's that day because of crappy reloaded ammo, that we know tends to have problems out of our M4 style rifles.  I  used factory ammo, and PMAGS and of course mine were flawless.

Also, Gap abuses the hell out of the rifle.  He hardly ever cleans it and it just sits there for a long time as well.  That thing will rust shut probably from GA humidity, then he'll bang on the bolt with a hammer, set it free, and then maybe add some oil or something, and then it will shoot just fine.

You couldn't do that with my AR and expect it to function like that.

I was sitting in the cafeteria at work, and saw on the tv that they had this guy trapped in the cabin. I told a guy that I work with, that I bet Barry called somebody and told them that he wanted this matter over with by the time he goes on the air for the State of the Union Address. I walked past the tv at break time and saw the cabin was burning. I just figured he wouldn't want to share the viewing audience.

Currahee,
.22LR upper or .22LR conversion? I love my .22 conversion!

It's a Smith 15-22, dedicated 22 rifle that operates the same as an AR.

I will say that a 22 that ingrains the same muscle memory and sight picture as your primary rifle is probably the most valuable shooting training aid you can have.  Lot's of drills you can do that you probably can't afford to do with an AR, plus you can shoot on smaller ranges (that is my clubs rimfire/pistol range) that might be more accessible.  Something those of us training on our own dime need to explore.

Post by: JohnyMac on August 13, 2013, 09:52:24 AM
I agree 100% Currahee!

Thanks to the ammo shortage, we have been using .22LR conversion bolts in our regular AR's. They work great and are cheap to fire. Mags are pricy though but oh well. We have found that you need to use new high velocity .22's though. Old bullets HV bullets seem to jam.

I do recommend cleaning your barrel though after you go through a few hundred rounds or so as there is a waxy coating on most .22LR bullets.

This is the conversion unit we use: http://www.cmmginc.com/category_s/1823.htm (http://www.cmmginc.com/category_s/1823.htm) Alpha

Fun vid Currahee. It looks like everyone was having a blast!

I wonder if you have on your "to film" list a multi gun shoot with people engaging targets on knees and stomach rather than standing up? I know it is tough to do as you don't want shooters shooting up and over the berm. For training purposes it might be more realistic training for a firefight. I don't know as I have never been in a firefight.  :gunner:

Just thinking outside the box here

Well, I have videos on how to use cover etc.  How to shoot from different positions- but the ones where there is movement are more exciting- obviously.  Multigun matches are all about getting though a course of fire, that is usually designed to test a specific skill- when I design stages there is usually an element of getting in to some obscure position and getting a fast hit while uncomfortable.  I haven't been in many gunfights myself- but as far as getting a lot of people out to hopefully make them more survivable, that's what I've come up with.

Here is a guy you might recognize- shooting with us last month

Here is a stage from yesterday- all about shooting from cover

The next big thing on my to film list is gonna be on vehicle tactics post SHTF- other stuff just happens first because it's easy, or it's fun.  Those videos today where not me, but a buddy.

Both video's were great Currahee!!

Quick story:
My brother and I were doing a lot of CQB drills up at the cabin (Weapons empty). Then we would do courses similar to the first video you showed (before ammo became scarce and or pricy).

Anyhow, a buddy of my brother who is a former Army guy (I think Ranger) joined us for a weekend at the cabin. We all did a few CQB and then course drill with live weapons. At the end of the day while swapping stories over a beer my brothers buddy asked, "Do you ever do drills where you have to crawl, sprint, dive, shoot under/over obstacles?"

Of course we said "no" and his recommendation was that we should - "As most battles are not fought standing straight up" he said.

To be quite honest, we never took his advise and then the ammo crisis came. Actually other than doing a little plinking we haven't even done any course shooting of late. Time to buy a few more .22 mags for when we use our .22LR conversion bolts. ;)

His channel doesn't exists anymore. I dunno if he moved to other account or just disappeared like LnL.
