hot under the collar - checkcard # stolen
« on: September 19, 2013, 08:11:06 PM »
I found out today I had my check card number stolen.  I've done all the things I need to do (police report, card cancelled, checking my credit report, etc.), this is posting so I don't throw something I'm so angry.  What is wrong with people that think it's OK to steal from other people?  Those bastards are lucky they did this electronically and not physically.  I may seem soft and fluffy, but I tell ya if I had those $#*&ers in front of me they would not enjoy themselves.  :gunner:

On a more practical, level-headed note, I forget who was talking about going plastic-less, but I'm starting to think that idea is better and better.  The last time this happened I was just out of high school and I lost like $20 bucks for someone who signed up for a porn site with my card.  Right now we're on the hook for almost $300 spent at a Macy's two states over! Our bank has been great - don't get me wrong.  They emailed an alert to me within moments of the charge hitting our account.  They said as soon as it posts to call them and get the dispute process moving, etc.  But I have checks outstanding on that account!  I have bills I pay via a charge to the check card, not to mention being able to get gas. Argh!

Sorry to hear it. I hope your financial workaround completes ASAP, and I also hope they catch whoever did it.

I prefer having the .gov as a middle man myself.  Seems so personal when they don't wait for the monthly check and just take it from you direct.

We have gone to cash for budgeting reasons and transfer money into a separate debit account for online transactions so there is never more than $20.00 (avg. bal) they can steal at any given time.

If you go cash only, here is a nice carrier I made for free. :)

That stink Wellie, hope it all works out in the end. Karma will get those who stole from you.

I am sorry to hear what happened Wellie. As Crudos wrote, "Karma will get those who stole from you."

I know of more and more folks who are only using cash. When I buy things I don't want uncle to know about, I send a USPS check.  ;)

I asked a good friend of mine who is a Paralegal, why he has started to use cash instead of a CC one night when we were out on the town. He told me he doesn't want his transactions followed. He went on to explain that he worked on a case where he found out that all of our plastic transactions were stored in a government data base so they could be pulled out at a later time to use against you.

Now this guy is a very level headed guy and although we share similar political theories & thoughts he thinks I am a wacko for prepping. However, he has stopped using using plastic.

For kicks and giggles I am going to try and wean myself off of plastic.

Thanks for all the support.  The police report is filed and the process truly cemented my belief that law enforcement is useless for your standard individual.  They're essentially report-takers.  Don't misunderstand, the cops I talked to today (and yes, plural because of the run around as to should it be boro cops or staties, and what time does the office really open after I got up at 6 am to get there at 7) were nice.  I'm sure they're earnest, wanting to serve their communities, etc. and I respect them for that attitude.  But there's not a darn thing they can do unless they get flat-out lucky.  They certainly aren't doing anything to stop this kind of thing from happening, that's the bank's job doncha know.  And, considering how far out I live, I certainly wouldn't depend on them for any sort of quick response for my personal safety.  Calling 911 from here would be like saying, "hey bad guy, take your time robbing and assaulting me, no hurry."  Grr...

Yupper

I am reading "Surviving Home" by A. American and the typical person in the story keeps saying why isn't the government here to help us, "I don't understand?" Then when the government comes they are REALLY not happy. After all, how does a handful of Feds deal with thousands upon thousands of hungry sheeple?

Lesson learned - "Don't be a sheeple."
