Almost half of coronavirus patients have digestive symptoms, study finds
By Robert Preidt
March 19, 2020 / 4:40 PM / HealthDay

Diarrhea and other digestive symptoms are the main complaint in nearly half of coronavirus patients, Chinese researchers report. Most patients with the coronavirus have respiratory symptoms, but these findings from the early stages of the outbreak show that digestive problems are prevalent in many patients with COVID-19.

"Clinicians must bear in mind that digestive symptoms, such as diarrhea, may be a presenting feature of COVID-19, and that the index of suspicion may need to be raised earlier in these cases rather than waiting for respiratory symptoms to emerge," wrote the investigators from the Wuhan Medical Treatment Expert Group for COVID-19.

The researchers analyzed data from 204 COVID-19 patients, average age nearly 55, who were admitted to three hospitals in the Hubei province between Jan. 18 and Feb. 28, 2020. The average time from symptom onset to hospital admission was 8.1 days.

.   .   .

Patients with digestive symptoms had a variety of problems, including loss of appetite (nearly 84%), diarrhea (29%), vomiting (0.8%) and abdominal pain (0.4%).

.   .   .

We planted 6 fruit trees, and 5 dwarf citrus trees, and a couple of banana trees today.  The citrus trees and the bananas were planted in large pots, so they'll be residing in our home during the colder months.  I cleaned out the chicken coop and poultry yard, all the old bedding material and manure was spread out in the garden.  I then rototilled the main garden.  The garden will be rototilled at least once more before we start planting.  I also installed another raised bed in our greenhouse.  My spouse planted 6 head of lettuce in that raised bed.  The greenhouse is getting full.  We noticed one of our cherry tomatoes is already bearing a couple of tomatoes.  I had to pollinate the tomatoes by hand, using a small brush.  It's good to get some fresh vegetables, since we haven't been to a store in a couple of weeks.

Good job (s) gentlemen.

MrsMac hates going into our basement. So she always takes our dirty cloths to wash at a local suds & duds. I spent the week hooking up the washer and dryer that we have had in our basement just sitting there collecting dust for over a year.

MrsMac isn't happy about this leap forward so I told her that I would do the wash if she will fold. She agreed. This compromise will keep her out of the basement and away from the suds & duds and all the little petri dishes running around.  ;)

Isn't it amazing how this pandemic has us doing all of the things off our checklist that have been there for a long time?

Realized that we do not have many hard copy books and magazines at our cabin. Have plenty of digital versions, kindle, audible and I pad. So all off grid and american survival magazines are heading to the cabin. Also old paperback novels, couple of books on firearm disassembly and whatever else strikes an interest.

I painted the living room, put together a compost bin, and fixed the mail box all in a week. We have been knocking stuff out with whatever we have at the house for the time being, and finding things to do once we can justify going to Lowe's/local lumber yard. It's been nice spending time together outside as a family. On my days off we eat all three meals together at the dining room table. It has definitely refocused us as a family.

I pulled the trigger on some more  j-pole antennas, for HT's and base stations from https://n9taxlabs.com/  and various connectors, can't have enough of them.

His 2m j pole is the bomb, keep one in my suv trunk box, string up in tree, connect to mobile in vehicle, get crazy range.

Also, spinning up mag team with uv-82hp ht's pre loaded with various freqs frs/gmrs/murs/marine and the like so they have local comms/scanning and can hear me when i go into net control mode from my commo toc...

I bought a 10 pack and extra batteries last year, coming in handy now...

I'll give a few out to like minded neighbors too when the time is right, and the comms soi/sop info too...

We have continued the process of breaking our the preps this week.

1. Cleared and getting the garden ready to plant.
2. Vacuum sealing all of the bulk items we purchased as a top up.
2. Filled all the fuel containers for a reserve. 100L of Diesel and 40L of gasoline.
3. Sorting and arranging the medical supplies.
4. Visited the boat and got it ready for us after the winter lay up.

Still have a large list of things do do though.

I finally got around to installing a bidet in our bathroom.  A bidet has been at the top of the spousal unit's list for a looooong time, but I hate plumbing.  It was suppose to be a 10-15 minute job, but it ended up taking about 2 hours.... damn leaks, but it's working great according to my wife.

I built and installed protective fence enclosures for our recently planted fruit trees.  Last night I noticed some rabbits in the yard, so the enclosures became a high priority.  And among other things, I finally capped our recently tapped spring.  I covered it with a heavy plastic, and then a layer of top soil, and then seeded it with grass.  The weather was ideal with temps in the low 70's and low humidity, couldn't ask for better working conditions.

Does getting the mower out and cutting the onions count? I'll tell you one thing. I won't have to plant a garden. My whole two acres is all onions, poke berrys, dandylions, and a little bit of wild lettuce to boot. Oh, and I forgot about the Blackberry bushes and the wild grapes in my woods.

Somehow she makes the front work, I must have missed the class that day, because I don't see how it works for her.  She's soooo happy that she wants me to install another one in our guest bathroom.

      I'm always happy

I sent an ALERT email to my family and friends who by the way aren't preppers about the coming food shortages. My daughter and her family do not watch the news at all they have absolutely no idea what is happening. A total of nine people were alerted. My oldest is a hardened prepper.

Smithfield Foods closes U.S. pork plant due to new coronavirus
Reuters

CHICAGO — Smithfield Foods Inc, the world’s biggest pork processor, said on Thursday it is temporarily closing a plant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, because of the new coronavirus, the latest disruption to the U.S. food supply chain from the outbreak.

The company will suspend operations in a large section of the pork plant on April 11 and completely shutter it on April 12 and April 13, after employees tested positive for the virus, according to a statement.

The plant has a total of 3,700 workers, Smithfield said. It supplies nearly 130 million servings of food per week, or about 18 million servings per day, in the United States, according to the company, which is owned by China’s WH Group Ltd.

Tyson Foods Inc said on Monday it closed a pork plant in Columbus Junction, Iowa, after more than 24 cases of COVID-19 involving employees at the facility. U.S. beef plants run by JBS USA and National Beef Packing Company have also shut.

It may not seem like prepping but I went to the Bank today and took out some more cash to add to my cash stash. If you don't have a Physical Silver and Cash stash, you might find that its something that can come in really handy when the SHTF. Having plenty of food and ammo is important but things are going to break or need repairing and that's when your stash is going to come in handy.

I was listening to South Dakota Governor today and she reported that their will be beef and pork shortages at the end of April going into May due to slaughter houses being shutdown thx to the virus. She is relaxing her stay at home order to allow businesses like slaughter houses to reopen.

JM,
You are correct. That Smithfield plant does 4-5% of the nations pork processing.
There are other Iowa processors that are getting hit with large clusters of Covid-19 infections within the last few days. Tyson in Columbus Junction closed yesterday and Iowa Premium Beef closed this week as well. Both plan to reopen as soon as they can. Discussion is now swirling with what to do with potentially contaminated products. With the plant closures, the system backs up, but only for so long.
Chickens are also suffering with entire hatches being destroyed due to not enough workers to maintain them. Dairy farmers are dumping milk because they cannot sell enough of it and you just can't turn a cow off.
Crazy times for sure - the consequences of stay at home orders.
