MrsMac and I bought 40 lbs of bone-in chicken thighs.

Washed them, cut off excess fat, and placed 3 to a pack in freezer bags. Threw in the freezer when done. Ended up with 29 bags (dinners) of chicken thighs.

It came out to 83ยข a pound. Not the cheapest chicken thighs but we don't have to worry about purchasing this for the next year or so.

Ordered a generator interlock kit. Bought some canned sausage, corned beef and yeast. Slowly stocking up. Put my dingy up for sale and with that money I'll be able to buy a duel fuel generator.

I just got done cutting up the logs left over from last years tri-axel load. Ended up with 3 1/2 cords from that.

If you add what is left over from last year, 1 1/2 cords, I still need two more cords for my 2017/18 winter heating needs. I easily have that in trees that have come down during this spring/summer season of endless rain and thunder within tractor drive from the redoubt*.  I am sore as hell from the cutting of logs this week.

* Based on the recent current events, I have moved from use the term "the cabin" to "the redoubt."  ;)

Don't you need a second log wall with 18 inches of packed mud between the 2 for it qualify?

Started installing the outside receptacle for my generator hook up to my circuit panel, called my propane company and asked them to fill me up this week. Bought two more 5 gallon gas cans and filled them up.

Completed the generator interlock system. Now all I have to do is plug the generator in and I can can run everything off of my circuit panel except the A/C. Much better than a transfer switch and a lot cheaper.

Good stuff JoJo and Jackalope.

I/we ...

> Ordered my chimney guy to come out to inspect and clean the chimney,
> Picked 8 pints of green beans. Ready to can in the next couple of days,
> Picked 10 lbs of tomatoes. Cored and froze waiting for the last tomatoes to ripen or freeze on the vine,
> Had 9 yards of 2B stone delivered to -
   - Update the parking lot/location, and
   - Do a few small projects around the redoubt,
> Froze a couple of gallon ziplock bags of sweet peppers,
> Saved the seeds from the sweet peppers, and
> Changed the water in the saved tomato seeds containers. I will strain and then clean each seed in a week or less.

Yesterday, I took a defensive shotgun course.  The course was pretty basic, but it was nice to get some range time, and try out different types of ammunition, and see the results.  Since it was a defensive shotgun course, I decided to pick up a Keltec KSG bullpup shotgun, which is a great example of a defensive shotgun.  This one had come from the distributor heavily modded, so it has a front vertical grip, folding iron sights, a crimson trace mounted flashlight, breaching muzzle, single point tactical sling, etc.  It's comforting to know that if something goes bump in the night, that I'll have a firearm capable of carrying 12-16 shells, depending upon the load.

I learned that a typical buckshot shot is approximately the size of a 9mm bullet, and each buckshot shotgun shell has 8 or 9 of these spherical pellets.  Ouch!

WOW! Sounds pretty cool jackalope. Next time you take a class let me know and maybe I could join ya'.

Stupid Question: Can you load the Keltec shot gut with more than 10 rounds in NY and be legal?

Yes, because it's a pump action.  If it was a semi-auto like a SPAS-12, then the answer would be no.  I ordered a bunch of ammo for it today.  My son is coming to visit next weekend, so we'll have to give the Keltec a work out.

There is a tactical shotgun class that is being offered near Utica, NY, on October 7th.  Maybe we could coordinate for that one, though that one is relatively soon.  Here's the link: http://www.mdtstraining.com/training/schedule/practical-shotgun-skills-1-17/

Last weekend I really lucked out by attending a local farm auction, which was sparsely attended because of some beautiful weather.  I managed to fill some holes in my preparations.  I picked up a John Deere 4 wheel drive diesel tractor with some implements, a Coleman 5kw generator, another Husqvarna chainsaw(I already have one), a small meat slicer, and assorted pots and pans.  The prices were surprisingly low, for instance the tractor with a bush hog and a plow were priced at less than half of what just the tractors are selling for on farm equipment websites.  I know the seller, so I conferred with him before bidding.  All in all, it was an amazing day, because we stumbled upon the auction just before it started, and didn't even know it was scheduled.

A couple of days prior to the auction, I noticed some free solar equipment posted on Craigslist, and it had been posted just 10 minutes before I saw the ad.  I immediately contacted the seller, and made arrangements to pick the stuff up.  I ended up with a 100 watt panel, a Trace 40 amp charge controller, a DC circuit breaker panel, and mounting frames for two solar panels.  It'll be a nice addition to my current system.  The fellow had a remote cabin, which he ultimately connected to the grid, so he didn't need it any more.

I don't know why I've been so blessed, but I am thankful.  My wife says it's good karma.

Today was productive.  I got part of one of my gardens rototilled, and garlic planted for next year.  My wife did some harvesting of some kohlrabi, kale, and some onions.  Supposedly she's going to dehydrate the onions.  We've dehydrated kale before, and it just ends up as crispy leaves.  We still have some potatoes and carrots to harvest, which will probably happen next weekend.

I also transferred some ammo from the original shipping boxes to ammo cans, mostly 9mm and .50 BMG.  I'm thinking we're in pretty good shape ammo wise.

I still have all the winter preps to do, I have to get those done before the end of October because we typically have snow by then.
