What's in your "Go bag"?
« on: December 30, 2013, 10:36:51 PM »
Apparently there was some interest in my go bag thread I prematurely pulled down so show me what you've got.

I'm going to show you what's in my "Extended Deployment Go Bag". I still intend to get a more compact go bag of some kind for the "active shooter" scenario. This is more of a bag you grab when you might be fighting for a while. Depending on the scenario you could take this and your BOB. this bag is centered around the gear you need to fight. Its actually more of a kit as my long gun and ammo dosent fit in the bag. To be perfectly honest this is a poor mans kit that's trying to remain effective. As you'll see I'm running a model 26 glock. I sold off my 23 to get by. I intend to replace it in a model 19. But if I had to rock one pistol its the 26. I can carry deep concealed or fight full retard with it.

The gears pretty self explanatory. The 870 has (6) #00 and (6) Slugs in the side saddle.

The chest rigs carrying (24) #00. I'd put that chest rig setup against anything S.O.E. has for a shotgun functionality wise. I can load quickly from it. I'm not pulling stuff out and having crap dangle. Plus my ammo is total protected from the elements and can't fall out of loops.

 The ammo can carries:
(100) #00
(35) slugs
(70) 9mm
Batteries for lights
Weapon cleaning kit.

Next I have the following:

(2) pair of cargo pants
(2) shirts (one short sleeve, one long)
(1) Light but warm water resistant jacket.
(2) Pair of extra thick hikers socks
(2) Underwear
(1) Full face beanie
(1) baseball cap
(1) danner boots

Then I have my trim and slim pack with all the essential survival tools. And a more detailed booboo kit that handles things the IFAK on my chest rig dosent.

All put together it looks like this below. I realize there is a lot of room for improvement in the contents and in the way its carried. This is a broke man's effort here. It WILL be improving as the money starts to roll back in.

You really only need one set of clothes. No need to look clean. Pack more socks and underwear. Wet wipes too.

I do a lot of training exercises with the Army, i never pack a extra uniform when i go to the field.

Great post Ken. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

How much does your "go Bag" weigh? So your hands are free, is there an alternate way of carrying it other than the handles?

You know, I never really thought of shoes & clothes in our bug out bags, but I really should add some of those.  My "quick and dirty" go like you mention for an active shooter is actually my purse.  Like most women (and why I conform to this bloody stereotype I don't know - it's maddening) I have snacks, wet wipes, all my ID, money, small sewing kit, etc.

For our big bug out bag we have:

* walking stick (I got a collapsible one so it doesn't take up much space and the handle has a hook designed for climbing)
* first aid kit (pretty thorough - I use this frequently because it has Benadryl & pain killers, which helps me cycle them for fresh on a regular basis)
* hygiene stuff (washcloths, soap, wet naps, tooth care, etc.)
* A couple MREs, a couple protein bars (it'd be one meal a day, but I have enough calories for three days)
* multi-tool/knife
* small folding shovel
* firestarter (lighters and flint/steel)
* saw (one of those chain/cord ones)
* Cylum sticks
* Maps of our area (in those weathertight bags. I can't remember the brand name, but they're fricking awesome)
* pen & a notebook
* compass
* flashlight
* toilet paper
* emergency money & copies of important documents like passport/drivers license
* weather radio (one of the crank kinds - also has a USB port so can charge my phone with it)
* collapsible water jug (designed to be filled before you leave)
* water purifier
* paracord
* Purell
* rain poncho
* signal mirror

I know I'm forgetting some stuff, but without going and unpacking it that's what I know is in there. :D

The bag is pretty heavy, but there was a method to our madness.  It's designed to get us from wherever we may be back to the farm with a specific eye to where Mr. WPW works/where I used to work for distance/number of days.  It's in a backpack so I could wear it if needed, but the plan of action if cars weren't an option was to find a shopping cart (when I worked in the town in which we used to live both our condo and my workplace were both right next to grocery stores) and throw anything and everything I could in there.

Also, we don't carry guns in the bag because we both frequently cross the state line into MD and they have some ridiculous notions about guns.  It's not insurmountable, but we weighed the pros and cons and likelihood of needing a gun and decided that at this point (subject to change with evolving situations) at this point there are more cons to trying to carry in MD than there are to not carrying regularly.  Plus, I don't have to worry about my car being stolen or broken into, which gives me peace of mind.

I do think, occasionally, what we'd do if Mr. WPW & I were somewhere together away from home when the SHTF.  We each leave our BOBs in the trunk, so I don't haul it from my car to his if he drives us somewhere.  Hopefully it'll never be an issue, but it's something I'd love thoughts on.

Great list Wellie!

My number one fear is being away from the BOL and having to travel on foot to it. Not for me but for MrsMac.

Although she is far better post her back operation she would be hard pressed to walk 1 mile let alone hundreds of miles.

Ya more socks is important. I kinda had it in the back of my head. Wet wipes are going for sure. I'm a firm believer in the wet wipe shower every morning. Like I said this is the gear bag. No food, water etc. In it.

You can wear those handles like backpack straps but I wouldnt want to go far like that. If I'm forced on foot its probably a little bit different scenario. That's when I would shed anything I can't wear. If you think about it 90% of that ends up on me. If I have time I could put all of that on from the get go and walk out wearing everything assuming the situation allows it. The bag alone probably weighs 20-30lbs if I'm guessing.
