How did our forefathers do it before cheep transportation and etc. A blend on some modern non-infrastructure tech from now, like solar for at least lighting and radios is handy and something they didn't have 200 years ago. . Using a radio to 'call' into town to see if it's worth the trip, that's handy. OTOH, 200 years ago, large farms did best if they were near basic transportation routes like waterways and roads, to transport and sell excess from the harvests, trade for other needs and etc. I live on the Chesapeake Bay watershed, so transportation by water and proteins like FISH are plentiful; also shell fish for those who eat them. I have a medium/small solar system for lighting, radios and some recharging on other things. Here e have enough 'closed' grandfather wells easily uncapped and put back into use without electricity, and we have long term water purification. It's not enough to run freezers and etc. but if the deep freeze is off for more than 2 days in moderate weather, we'll pull out the Ball jars and begin canning the meat in the deepfreeze.
We currently grow SOME of our food, herbs and peppers and if necessary we can fish for much of our protein needs.

Depeding how bad the regression is, we may be far behind the fore fathers. Watching an interview of Matt Braken promoting his latest novel that addresses this topic.
He points out that those settling the west were receiving goods at the nearest town that arrived via wagon carts hit those products were produced in factory?s. Also a lot of the items the colonies used were produced at factories in the cities are arrived through shipping from the Old World.

Back then communication moved at a snails pace which gave time to actually think about what was being said and time to think about how to respond. People today no longer think, they only know how to respond with emotional outbursts
