as have occurred in the past fewyears. Appears (as some here believe) and I am becoming more convinced, this year will be rather rambunctious.

I believe this year will be the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning, however you wish to look at it

But look who published article...cui bono?

Yeah it's a fair bit of gold advertising but the underlying logic is persuasive.

I read a thought provoking book this year:
The End of The World is JUST The Beginning by Peter Zeihan
He REALLY got it right about the breakdown of global shipping due to growing lack security on the high seas. The US Navy has been the trade route 'police' since post-WW II and he mentioned that were were dialing back that role and that the bad old days, of dangerous shipping routes and expensive ship's insurance were likely on the near horizon. What OTHER nation has a global navy who would even attempt to secure all global trade routes for all nations??? Yeaaaah, me neither. That was his position when the book came out, a few years ago. China has many ships, but is mostly a litoral navy; good for harassing unarmed Philippine fishermen, but not a major blue water navy.
Back to the couch for me.

Letting the seas revert to pirate days will hurt... others more than us. Our ocean moats and wide range of resources/capabilities being a plus. And forcing or "financially encouraging" us to restore making more of our "own stuff" again? Very, very good.
Bring our navy home and refit everything for a year and _then_ see if nations "miss us".
No more half-measures when we do engage.
And then... "If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared. ...

I totally agree. Time for us to take care of US.
