Russia has no need to "attack". Once their ethnic territory and Bonaparte/Hitler invasion-route concerns are mollified, they will be content to strengthen themselves using resource sales.
But our "leaders" are of the firm and confirmed (correct) belief that frightening the proles is a winning gambit in the game of Let's-Propagandize-&-Scare-the-Beejeebers out of them, to whatever measure is required that they will then stampede to trade their freedoms for "security".
