I want to paint my rifle to break up the black. I found this video and want to try this but with a lot darker colors. More so like woodland camo of the south. Now I've never painted anything... Oh and yeah yeah Duracoat. My rifle isn't a collectors piece it's a tool. I just want to break the black up. How did you guys paint your rifles and how? What do you think?
How to paint your rifle in a camouflage pattern (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q9YYy3O3m8#)

Go to AR15's site and search camo rifle. There a lot of good posts.
-
just get some kyrlon camo spraypaint from china mart
camo patterns generally suck pretty bad too, the most effective way is to just go random with it
-
we've all seen those good ol' boy pickup trucks with the homemade camo spraypaint job, and it usually looks gawd awful... I actually saw one recently that looked badass. it looked like he laid the base colors green and brown first, randomly. then on top of that he took some kind of thin-leafed foliage, kind of looked like branches of a rosemary bush (although I doubt that's what he actually used, but just for reference...) and used that as a stencil for a very light, almost smokey looking layer of black. looked solid. I may copy that dude's method if I ever get around to doing any homemade camo on something.
-
the best way to paint a vehicle is to lay down a base color, then completely drape camo netting over it hit it with the next color then for any 3rd color make a stencil and apply them at random
-
oh yeah that is pretty cool, I didn't think about using camo netting to cover it and paint. I got a shit ton of mil surp camo netting in the shed.
-
bro if it can be done with spray paint or duracoat i have done it more than a few times
-
Degrease that shit, oily metal will not take paint worth a shit, clean and dry..
Try Slip 2000 725, I've never used it but Pat Rogers recommends it ;D
I would hit up the Barbasol (http://www.barbasol.com) or Simple Green (http://www.simplegreen.com) simply because they will break the grease without melting plastics.
I don't know what to tell you to do about the parts that move like the safety selector, you don't want to have to break the paint to free that part. Maybe paint the gap with wax so you can clean it out.. I don't know. For sure you can tape over those areas to keep paint out.
Stuff paper in all the holes to keep paint out of the barrel and fire control group, don't fuck around.
Read the can of before you paint, start to spray past the part you're painting, CLEAN YOUR TIPS, go from light to dark, cheap paint is bullshit, Flat or Matte but no Semi or Gloss because shine sucks, don't paint rubber make sure the lens caps are on and tight and don't get screwed up over thinking it because it will wear off.
Oh yeah.. take picture and FLECK THAT SHIT!
-
I bought rustoleum ultra flat camouflage Green, tan, brown and black. Was going to get krylon but China Mart didn't have it. Also got some Ultra fine sand paper to help the paint Adhere to the rifle.
I'm going to work my way up, First I'm going to start with painting a magazine, then perhaps one of my mosins, and then i'll paint my AK. Still skeptic if I should paint the aimpoint H-1 and surefire with it or not.
-
Don't diss Krylon. It works really well. Here is my NERF gun with a Krylon Tan base and a few Krylon green stripes. Very matte and gives it a nice rough surface. Doesn't look very pretty when it gets some wear but it does what camo is supposed to do.
-
I wasn't dissing Krylon. Just wal mart didn't have it. I'm going to use a tan base coat as well.
-
Ya i was considering painting my shotgun. The hard part is rhe stock and forend are rubberized. Then the mag tube paint wont last long with the forend rubbing it off plus that might make the action rough... So really all i can paint is the barrel and reciever. I might just put a couple stripes on it and call it.
-
I feel ya, The paint I have says it sticks to plastic. All the parts on my ak besides for the pistol grip are metal. I'm honestly not to worried about the paint getting faded or chipping. As long as it breaks up the black and doesn't affect the over all function, it's fine with me.
-
Here is a good step by step process. Enjoy...

-
I would want to make sure that brake cleaner doesn't melt plastic and mask off so you don't paint your insides!
-
Thanks for all the feed back guys. That guy, I've already bought the masking tape. I'm going to stuff the inside with paper towels and a disposable ear protection down the barrel.
I'm still unsure what type of degreaser to use.. I have Winchester break free. I might just try barbasol shaving cream.
-
i'll make sure to post picture. I'm just waiting for a day above 50 degrees to paint.
-
Okay, now I have a LOT of experience with this shit... don't believe me, just ask papabear! lol
Reading the tutorial, that guy did a pretty damn good job explaining a lot of it so I wont have to type out a lot like I was going to! lol. I will add this:
DUSTING:
With the areas you don't want to dust covered, hold your paint can slightly farther away than you normally would. Press the "trigger" or sprayer (depending on what model you use) for only a brief moment. The goal of this technique is to put a light scattered spray of one color on top of another. The purpose of this technique is in recognition that nothing in nature is really one solid color. Even a rock or dirt has several colors in just one small swatch.
Also blending colors works great. When using "hard templates" that do not sit flush to parts of the rifle, you end up with blending due to the exposed edges.
And +1 what TG said...
ALSO, I ALWAYS used Krylon MATTE finish clear coat to round out my projects. Granted being non flat it adds a slight "shine" to it, it gives it a much more professionally done appearance as well as making it last SO much longer. They also make a FLAT clear coat but the last time I tried to pick some up they had recalled the entire lot locally...
-
Thanks for the input outonowhere. I'm honestly really scared to paint my rifle. lol. I just finished spraying the fuck out of it with winchester break free.
I don't want to paint my Aimpoint micro quite yet but I lock tightened it on so I just covered it in masking tape.
I've been watching painting videos and read tutorials non-stop. I just hope it actually turns out CAMO and looks decent. I'm going to hate going over it with some ultra fine sandpaper so the paint adheres to it better.
I'll try my best to do the dusting just like you said. I'm only painting one AK out of 4. It's not going to kill me.
-
fuck you guys, i painted my shotgun today [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at
-
well lets see it then big man.

No need to go over it with sandpaper, I never did any of mine. And the more coats/curing time the longer it lasts.
Also you can be creative with making patterns to help break up the outline. I have used window screens, and fishing net before.
-
...I have used window screens, and fishing net before.
I was thinking about trying burlap to see if I could make some "poor man's" digi-camo.
-
why would you want to make one digi cam? :p Least woodland works somewhat. But that's just my AO. Heavy pine/swamp.
-
outonowhere. Mind posting a picture or two of your work?
-
Thanks for filling in Outonowhere and good call on skipping the sandpaper.
While I haven't painted a firearm I have painted shit tons of metal that I've restored or made myself and you don't need to scuff sand unless you've got a rust issue.
If you have a rust issue all you really need to do is get the flaky stuff off and use a "rust kill" primer.
Now where did I leave that paint...
-
outonowhere. Mind posting a picture or two of your work?
LOL You would ask that!
I probably have some pics still floating around here somewhere, if not MAYBE on an old disk laying around. I went through a couple different camo patterns on my AK, but that got sold a while ago. I have not painted my AR yet but Im itching too lol. Now, if I cannot find any pics on my computer I do have a couple items that are still painted that I can get snaps of sometime tomorrow. So eventually, yes I will share with the class lol.
Also as to the question of heat from say the barrel that I have seen before on the other forum...
I took my AK out in about 105 degree heat and let it set on a metal bench, then sent at least a few hundred rounds through it in rapid succession and NEVER had an issue with flaking or fading. The only place you will see heavy wear of the paint is where it gets rubbed alot, like the AK receiver where the safety latch rubs.
If I think of anything else or if someone has any other questions just hit me up!
-
I for sure don't have a rust problem. Alright I'll skip the roughing. What did you do with the safety selector switch? I can't wait to see the pics.
First I'm going to lay a few coats of sand Tan over the black. Then coat the whole rifle in a deep forest green. Find some brush, pine and some other local brush. Spray on some brown streaks. then tan. Once it's all dry dust it with some black to give it a shadow effect.
-
Couldn't you practice on a board or something? Then you could get an idea of what it will look like. You might want to change something, and if not, it will give you a little confidence when doing the gun. I'm thinking about doing my SKS.
-
Great idea hj! Or even maybe a 2" piece of PVC or conduit pipe.
-
Great idea hj! Or even maybe a 2" piece of PVC or conduit pipe.
There you go, now we're stinkin...............uh, thinkin.
-
Ok Corn, what you're gonna wanna do is pick up a nice low mile Chevy van and practice on that. You see it's got all the same shapes as an ak. ;)
but really not a bad idea to practice it on a piece card board or something.
-
I'm going to practice on some magazines first. With designs. I really wanted to paint today.. It's raining though.. Now i need another day over 50 degrees...
-
okay, Tried painting a magazine.. Complete fail. Well. The camo design failed But I really didn't give it my all All the foliage and branches were soaking wet and I tried to free lance camo pattern.. NO-GO.
-
anything you fuck up on you can take all the paint right off with carb cleaner fyi
-
Painting when its over fifty is total horse shit. I painted when it was colder than witch tits out and did not have any real problems. Just make sure you are in a dry place lol. Also, getting a bunch of cardboard and practicing is a damn great idea!
On the camo pattern, just stick your foliage in the house in a warm dry place for a little bit. Maybe even turn the oven real low and leave the door open to help dry it out.
Also I tend to do my mags multiples at a time. Just be sure to leave a couple inches of space between each one so that you can get some color on the front and back too. Or you can do the bottoms, then stand them up once they are dry to do the sides.
Also, not sure on the whole "curing" part. Can says 15 minutes till its dry enough to handle and only wait a couple minutes between coats. So I usually just went after it till it all looked pretty good to me. Perhaps I will try the curing part this time when I get after my AR.
-
I just said fuck it!! Painted a base coat of tan, then just dusted the whole thing with green, brown and black. lol. No foliage. [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at
Looks eh but I'm probably just gonna have to re do it.
-
It sure does break up the black real well. haha thoughts?
-
Not bad man. I would say:
1. Make sure you break up the bottom a bit, looks like the green kinda stops halfway down.
2. Use dark brown to do a real light dusting in a few places.
Just my suggestions but YMMV. Its your rifle, you gotta be happy with it!
-
Thanks for the input! I was dusting it with some brown but it didn't seem like it was doing anything. i'll try square it away 2moro with some more green and brown. supppppper light coat of black for shadow.
-
if your gonna add black hold the can 5 feet from the fucking gun, black always fucks camo jobs
-
i might not use it now.
-
It sure does break up the black real well. haha thoughts?
That rug really ties the room together! I expected it to be Flecktarn...
-
yeah me too actually. I feel I failed it but honestly. When i look at the gun.. It doesn't look like a gun anymore. So mission accomplished?
-
Yeah man, you nailed it. It really softened the lines and will break that black target indicator outline for sure.
-
Gonna do a multicam style pattern in MARPAT colors for my rifle, and maybe hit a little black dusting for effect. Gonna pick up the paint tomorrow and do a couple of samples on some cardboard sheets I got laying around first. I will try to get pics of them as well. Hell, if I had a cameraman I might get video! But fat chance with that. I might still try to get some video in for you though.
Also check this shit out! Krylon got da hook up on their page!

attempted to fix it.
-
next to the family.
-
LMAO... There is always one in every family :P
That looks pretty good. I am gonna try a new method I read about last night and use sponges for some of the application. I plan on doing the samples tonight and will try to get some pics if not some video too.
Also, spend a couple hours today driving around MFin town trying to find sand color Krylon. Low and behold the last place I look, shoulda been the first. ACE Hardware had the LARGEST selection of rattle cans of any store I have been in yet, and they had the elusive light woodland green and sand colors. So here is what I am thinking...
Primer/Base: TAN, to make the other colors pop right and not have to fight the black of the rifle.
Main Base: Sand and Light Woodland. Some tan will be allowed to show through but not much, similar to MC
Next layer: a lot of splotches of OD Green
Next layer: Very few splotches of Brown, again similar to MC (MultiCam)
*Possible layer of Black dusting if I think it will improve the appearance
Final layer: Krylon Matte Clear Coat (as protectant/preserver) (I searched for a flat Clear coat but was unable to find any. I may try the Chinamart on my way home since that was the place I found the last one.)

Paint Your Gun - DESERT!!! - Rex Reviews.wmv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP7Mri4E46o#)
This guys uses a Sponge and it looks pretty beast. Check it out.
I should of got Krylon.. But I used rustoleum, Whats the difference? Krylon better?
Honestly Sounds like youre doing the same thing I did.. Just in a different way. I just painted randomly. I'm sure yours will turn out great.
-
Damn... thats badass. Glad I thought of it! ;D (not really lol)
So yea, I am basically going for that only more for my kind of area... like a lot more green and less brown lol.
-
Alright... so I did it in all of about 3-4 hours. Here is a little teaser for you. I will get more photos when I get back home tonight.

ENJOY!
-
oh man.. Dude that's legit awesome! You make me wanna start over. Oh btw I found Krylon flat clear coat today. Wish they had ultra flat.. But flat will do.
-
yea that is the one can I could not find anywhere I went was flat clear. Maybe if I take a scour pad to the matte it will dull it a bit but it is not horrible anyways. Plan on taking it to "the field" tomorrow and testing it out, see how it does. I will try to get some pics of that too
-
Finished product.
-
Not bad CK, looks similar to the way I had my AK... before she found a new home lol
-
thank you, thank you. I still think yours looks better.. But this was my first time painting. Thanks for the support! Can't wait to see more photos of your rifle.
-
I'm surprised no body has chimed in yet to comment on our work. ???
-
Not many people can have as kick ass of a job as me, just sitting at a computer all night BSing...
Of course this is my last night working here too lol. Then I will only be able to do this half the night! [url=http://yoursmiles.org/p-m
-
First off I want to applaud both of you for doing what I have not had the gutz to do. I think you did a class "A" job!
I too want to work on a MARPAT design for my rifle. A tad bit heavier on the green being in the NE forest. I was going to color copy a piece of my MARPAT camo gear and then use to make stencils. I think using a sponge method Vs. spray method may work better. Maybe even using those foam brushed with the stencil.
Anyhow looks great! [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
-
What you worried about JohnyMac? It's just a rifle bro. Paint it. It's a tool and this tool is more effective when it blends into its environment. I don't own guns to collect them. I own them to kill my enemies and burn their souls. Last thing i'll ever sell is my main rifle.
-
I hear you JM and originally was going to go for that but then realized that we have more Khaki and green in my AO and the dark brown really stands out. Maybe next time I will try to find a color that is softer than the dark brown or even the Marpat brown but more than the sand color. And with the sand on top of the tan without the green you can really tell a difference in the two colors. Again, I will have more pics in as soon as I get home and put her back together.
-
Thanks [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
-
Looks great guys... gotta get me some paint...
Tell us more about this sponge method.
-
Hey tG, that gun in the vid on the bottom of page 2 of this thread, looks like it would work good in your neck of the woods, don't it?
-
if there was less dark spots it would!
-
If the gods wanted camo'd rifles, then they'd make them that way. ;D
Great info folks.
-
god made rifles black so everyone could know gun owners from gun fighters
-
hey OONW, would you mind revealing your secrets in detail? that shit looks motherfucking killer... you guys have me seriously considering picking up some krylon and ruining my pretty black man-barbie... :-X
-
Sweet paintjob, cornkiller. I noticed you have a birdcage on the rifle. I have one on my AK also - much better than the slant-cut. [url=http://yoursmiles.org/p-m
-
Thanks bro! I was really worried i'd mess it up. But it was actually pretty easy. The A2 birdcage actually suppresses some flash. The slant cut is just to help combat muzzle climb in rapid fire/full auto. Best choice in my opinion and only 12 dollars? I can't believe they want 90 dollars for some of the "flash hiders" out there.
-
The bird cage.. dollar per dollar is in my humble opinion the best flash hider money can buy..
So I'll put my money where my mouth is. If JMac paints his rifle I'll paint my beloved LMT.... PINK!
-
The sponge method is really easy to do and there are a couple ways to do it. Again, if I can enlist the aid of a camera person I will try to show you all how to get it done. Till then I will right a mini instructable:
You need whatever can of spray paint you want to use, a glass, or plastic bowl and a Faux Artists sponge like from a hobby store. Granted you could probably use an ordinary sponge but these sponges have varying size holes so it doesn't turn out as uniform.
Apply your base coat(s)
Take the sponge and tear a chunk off of it about the size of two or three of your fingers curled up
(use a different/clean piece for each color)
take the bowl and spray the paint into it, letting it pool in the bottom.
Dip the sponge in the paint. (I recommend using only one side or end of the piece to wet with paint, then use the clean side to dab off and spread the paint lightly around. When using this method, the sponge should be "dabbed" onto the surface and lifted straight up off the surface. Do NOT move the sponge while it is in contact with the surface or you will end up with a large smear.
It applies here especially that you can add but it very hard to remove. So apply paint sparingly.
Any questions post here and PM me.
-
TG Wrote:

PINK? Please do not do that!
It's on the list of "todo's" but not till it is warmer, e.g. Spring.
OONW & Cornkiller
When you put your base coat on did you break down your rifle like the guy on the earlier post from AR15.com? Or?
-
No I didn't break it down. I just covered all the areas I didn't want painted with masking tape. I stuffed the internals/barrel with paper towels..
I'm actually going to paint a buddy's sks today.
-
Great killer...Pictures please when you are done. :))
-
so I'm doing it. [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at
if it turns out like shit, I'm holding cornkiller personally responsible. :P
-
Yeah NOLA! You and I will hook up and then find him and then kick his ass! ;D
-
Okay so here is the moment you all have been waiting for! Oh and BTW a tip I forgot to post earlier. If you are needing to sponge a touch up a little, forgo the bowl and just spray the paint onto the sponge!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/93445448@N03/8500573470/# (http://www.flickr.com/photos/93445448@N03/8500573470/#)

Also, when I did mine I removed the bolt completely, and took out the charging handle so I could paint it as well. I then stuffed napkins in the receivers to prevent any paint from getting in the good parts a piece of parking popcorn in the barrel lol.

Great job OONW!
-
so it's done for the most part. came out pretty kickass actually. didn't use OONW's sponge method BUT.... I didn't get alot of the sharp contrasts that I wanted from my foliage (I used a bunch of tall grass and other various foliage for stencils).. so I may actually go back and sponge on some contrast colors on the stenciled spots. idunno. either way, it'll do, that's for sure. twas a good first attempt. [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
pics to come soon.
(cornkiller.... see what you started bro? lol)

Wow! It looks Great NOLA! [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
-
thanks JM. I was winging the hell out of it but it ended up coming out pretty cool. not exactly how I envisioned it but still a pretty good turnout.
now i gotta paint some mags to match... >:D
-
in case anyone is curious:
I hit it with a base coat of tan, came back with some random OD green stripes, then stenciled over some tall grass with brown, and peppered it with tan and green again (while the grass was still on it)

Nola, you're left handed?

Nola, you're left handed?
??? no, why?
-
Yeah TG why? It looks like his safety is on the left side.
Remember, that left handed people are right minded. :))
-
Nola, you're left handed?
??? no, why?
How do you activate your light?
-
holding the vert grip. my thumb rests right on the button. it's actually one of the reasons I stopped using the AFG and switch to a normal vert grip.
-
That paint job looks great NOLA! 8)
Don't ever drop that in the grass, you'll never find it. ;D
-
Nola, it didn't look like you could get you light turned on. I'm pretty sure v0dka is on the same track.
-
Nola, it didn't look like you could get you light turned on. I'm pretty sure v0dka is on the same track.
nah it works out pretty well actually. not as good as a pressure switch but it's good enough. I mounted the light in a specific spot in conjunction with the vert grip so that when my left hand is on the grip, my thumb sits right there behind the button on the rear of the light.
the only thing that troubles me about it is that it's just one more thing to draw focus and attention away from the target. one more gadget to manually tinker with. sooner or later maybe I'll drop the cash for a pressure switch but this set up will do for now.
-
Looks good NOLA, don't matter how you do it as long as it works! [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
-
Looks good NOLA, don't matter how you do it as long as it works!
thanks bro. and crudos.
just to throw this out there, if anyone tries the same technique I used, I would allow a day or two for your foliage to wilt. when it's fresh, it doesn't lay down on the rifle very well and allows some of the paint mist to get underneath the spots where it's not laying flat. I figure if you rip your foliage out of the ground and give it some time to wilt and go limp, it'll probably give better results.
example, I painted about 10 mags to match the rifle, and by that point in the night, all the grass was limp and wilted, and the mags ended up coming out better than the rifle because the stencil foliage laid down flat on the surface of the mags.
-
OONW, Damn dude that looks Great. I can't even see it in the second picture.
Haha Nola, I Guess I did start something. I winged mine as well and it turned out like I wanted. ( was going for the old BDU woodland camo look) Your rifle looks great dude.
Alright JohnyMac, It is alll on you. Your turn to paint your rifle so thatguy will paint his pink! No ballls! Won't do it!! :P :))
Alright today I painted my buddies Norinco SKS and I painted 5 more of my AK47 Magazines today. Turned out pretty beast. He wanted his to have more tan on due to the clay/sand in his area.
In the process of painting the magazines, I took out the springs and followers then boiled them in Dawn soapy water to take off all the oil, grease and muck.
-
Nicely done CK. [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
-
Great job!
Yupper CK, I am up next. [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

Funny story from a few days ago. Was at the airsoft store with Papabear and indeed up taking in my rifle by request so they could see the paint job in person. Well I showed it offd and was carrying it around the store. At this point I should add that I was wearing multicam parts that day. So I'm reading my rifle on my boor when one of the employees freaks out at me. He hasn't noticed the rifle next to my pant leg and thought I had left it laying around in the store. Lol true story!
-
so i finally found some flat clear krylon and hit the rifle with it. ohhh disappointment. it's got a freakin sheen to it dammit! granted, not nearly as slick as glossy, of course, but it's there.
does anyone have experience with using steel wool, or maybe even extremely fine sandpaper to rough up a clear finish?
like i said, it's really not that shiny, but compared to how dull it was before the clear coat, it's like a damn mirror. i kinda want to rough it up but I'd hate to fuck up the awesome new paint job after all this effort. any input will be appreciated.

IMO leave it alone. It will mellow out with age. If you just have to scuff it up: Use brass wool not steel wool. Steel wool rusts. You will never get it all of your rifle.
-
Trust me on this one, if you wanna take away the sheen then throw some dirt on it lol. Bro, I use Matte finish and you still cannot see it in the sun till you are within boulder tossing distance. If you are really worried about it I would either use a real fine sand paper lightly on it or just dust it VERY lightly with the ultra flat. Either way I would suggest trying whatever you do on a smaller removable part of the rifle first so if you arent happy with that method it wont be too painful to start over or try again.
And Welcome to DIY Weapons and Gear Customization. Even after doing this... oh about a dozen and a half times I am still learning new things! Don't let a little set back (if it really IS one) bring your spirits down.

Rub on it with a scotch brite pad.. fuck steel wool.
-
that scotch pad idea sounds the most attractive. (btw it's really NOT that big of a deal, i guess i'm just somewhat of a perfectionist)

Rub it with a scotch brite.

leftover paint = shotgun makeover... >:D pics to come (it came out even better than the rifle...)

Niiiiiiice!

You boy have inspired me to paint my rifle.
I've taken JMac's protest into consideration and have not painted it a lovely white/red/pink camo and have chosen what I think is the pattern most likely to avoid unwanted attention.
May I present my LMT.

And yea, I have plenty of paint (besides the tan which ran out on my last batch of mags) so I am thinking my Save Phace needs a bit of a "makeover"

next to the family.
Cornkiller why haven't you converted your saiga?
-
Just don't want to do it. I'd rather keep the standard stock on it with the 20inch barrel and scope. I have 3 other AK's.
-
Never really been into painting my stuff. Till today ???
Found some " rustoleum sand " type paint. Looked and felt bad ass. Might give it a run on something.
-
Tuned up the old rust bucket.

Similar to what is already posted, but thought the pictures cleared up some questions I had.
CAMO UP!

Ha, I really have to take some pics of mine now. That's basically the method I used on my Sig and just for kicks on my pellet gun. Painters tape works well, but you can also use a hot glue gun to experiment with shapes. That's a one or two layer job though. I did 5 layers on my Sig using painters tape.
