There are a few cases that I can see owning Gold and Silver coin but they are few and far between.

Now .22 bullets packaged in 50 round boxs.. that will be the new twenty dollar bill.

If i had 30k id buy a chunk of land so fast... id camp on that fucker if i had to... id feel so free knowing i have a peice of land that is all mine no matter what. Assuming i pay my property taxes of course  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at lol

But seriously... Any sizeable land is a dream come true like no other for me. All of the sudden you can put walking cheeseburgers on it... and plant those nasty green foods.... all of these things at your fingertips simply by owning dirt.

And finally... Dont you dare pull out gold or silver for trade if you run into me... its hard to laugh and keep a sight picture.

Make a cabin off the timber on the property is the BEST way to get a house for free, if you go up in the MNTS, the building inspectors don't care around there, because word is they will get shot snooping around other people's property.  No need to get license or plans approved, seriously.  Taxes can be taken care of by raising cattle, honestly.  All you need is about 20 acres on a very difficult ridge that is hard to reach except by one way in and one way out.  Sounds perfect to me.

Like 100 bucks?  That's about the comparison to 100 million dollars compared to Soros' BILLIONS.  You do understand that right?

I hear ya' EJR however what you are saying is a tough assignment. Take it from someone who bought a log cabin kit. Cutting your own trees; curing them and then building a log cabin is quite a feat. Not impossible (Obviously) but quite like climbing Mt. Rainer.   :)) For my hardwood floor I traded hemlock trees for finished maple and cherry flooring. Even after receiving our flooring it took me 6 months to normalize the moisture in the planks enough so I could lay them.

Grudgie if I was you (Which I am not) and I had a desire to buy PM's I would stick with silver. You can use silver to barter...You would use gold to buy a business.

To TG's point the best barter tool is .22LR. At between $15- to $20- a bulk pack, what at great deal! Think about this...Most folks in a TEOTWAWKI will be tooting a .22 cal rifle / pistol. A box of 50, .22's will be worth a one ounce piece of silver.

I am enjoying the discussion on this subject. PLEASE... lets keep it rolling along. I am reading some great comments and thoughts!   [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

Yea you're right. George Soros is a crazy old bat who doesn't know what the hell he is doing..  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

Look, he may have put around 800 million in gold recently. If it was 800 million or 8 hundred, why would George Soros buy a bad asset?

Hey Grudgie, gold isn't a 'bad asset' gold is a great insulator. If you do your homework you will see that what Jmac is saying is correct. Gold has never increased in value.... EVER!

SO why is it trading at $1780? You ask, its because the unit of currency that buys it is WORTHLESS.

No shit, a man with a wool 3 piece suit, an ounce of gold and a .38 pistol is in the exact same position as he was in 1930 because as a representation of wealth Wool suits, Gold and Pistols have all retained their value against inflation.

Was shit cheaper back in the day? no money was worth more.

If you would like to we can get deep on this topic but if you check the record all the way back to when we left the gold standard you will see that the buying power of gold and money has always been relative.

My attempt to store wealth is to put away things that will keep their value or maybe increase in value due to scarcity. I live smack dab in the middle of the biggest stretch of desert in America so you know that post collapse I will have a very hard time getting my hands on some things due to the distance between me and where that good is actually available. Shrimp- Gone, Lobster- Never Again, Oranges- I hardly knew you. Look around at where you live. What won't you be seeing again if shit hits the fan. Stock extra of those idems.

Suger for example will become a luxury in most of the world because of the labor it requires. They won't be planting suger beets in Nebraska if there is no grid power to run the Domino Refining Plant.

Black Pepper... Does that shit grow anywhere? seriously...

Heavy Nylon Thread, the kind that you would use for sewing together a pair of boots. The process that makes it starts as raw oil. Add all kinds of energy and you get thread. You know that isn't going to be happening.

So I pass the torch to you guys, list three tangible assets that could serve as currancy post SHTF.

Yep, gold is just a financial place holder.  A value place holder.

Gold keeps going up in USD price, because USD are becoming more and more worthless because of QE and inflation.  Its that simple.

Gold is simply a hedge against inflation.  That is all.

In fact, if you held one ounce of gold from 1850 until now, that gold would buy you a couple suits and a pistol, the same way it would buy you a few suits and pistol today.

Its a VALUE holder.  That is it.  Nothing more.

TP is going to be huge! I need to really start stocking that one idem.

Hey gang, please explain why you would think those items would make a good currency for your particular AO.

You notice I didn't put down Gasoline? Have you guys read James Wesley Rawles' Book Survivors?

I agree with him that the 4 corners will keep making coal, power and fuel. So I am not going to stock any fuel past my own need because if someone is making it locally then I don't see much market for it.

I would say the same with Weed in CA or tobacco in VA.

OK, I and my brother are at the BOL this weekend finishing the 1st floor hardwood floor (Bedrooms). I opened up SP for him to read this subject and here are three things:

SMc                                                                          JMc
.22LR ammo  (A)                                                                 Fasteners: Screws, Nails, Nuts & Bolts (1)
Viagra  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at   (b)                                .22LR ammo (2)
Misc. spare parts for all firearms  (C)                                  Chain saw parts, e.g. plugs, pull cords, chain, etc (3)

A) Buy in bulk and vacuum seal them
B) The older gentleman will beat a path to your door
C) When you go to gun shows buy misc. parts for cheap and put 'em away

1) Not unlike the Domino Sugar Plant comment, there will not be many fasteners being produced. In parts of the world they burn
down houses and then sift through the ashes for the fasteners
2) Well daaaa!
3) I live in the middle of a wood paradise. A chain saw is a must for heat, light, cutting planks, killing zombies, etc.

I've been trying to come up with a list of three particular items that would fair well as currency in my area and something occurred to me.

NW Arkansas seems to be populated by two types of people - Wal-Martians and Arkansans... and no they're not the same. :/ I consider myself to be the later of the two and in this area we're dying out.
Which means I'm surrounded by upper-middle class the-sky-will-never-fall hipster goobers.

So we'll be stocking up on all the basics and more because lets face it, if SHTF all those goobers will be extremely needy sons-uh-bitches.

Good lord we need to move...
Any suggestions? Haha...
