Frost River Isle Royale
« on: July 05, 2017, 11:20:58 PM »
Just thought I'd share a picture of my Isle Royale pack by Frost River. I can't review it as I've only had it out once and didn't really hike anywhere with it. I paid around $30 for the bed roll straps(not pictured) so it came to around $400 shipped. It will definitely outlive me though. There is an axe slot between the two front pouches but my axe is a bit too long to set down with it in there. If you ever encountered a bear you could just jump in this bag and you'd be safe from even the sharpest claws and still have some leg room to stay comfortable while you wait for the bear to move on. Perhaps I'll add pictures of the bags contents some time as I'm quite fond of the stuff I've accumulated.

I'm not really looking to get rid of it but if I ever decide to, you'll be the first to know.

So I finally took this pack on a trip. Pack weight was approximately 45lbs. The hike included a 2.5 mile trail with a 1700ft of elevation gain. Starting at 6400ft and finishing at a little over 8000ft. From there the net gain was minimal but I did go up and down a lot of steep ridges to arrive at my campsite off the Pacific Crest trail. Round trip was about 6.5 miles from truck to campsite and back the next day. This pack is not comfortable, at least not yet. But what 45lb pack feels amazing right? Perhaps after the leather straps break in(as well as my shoulders) it will improve. That being said, I like this pack. Everything you need will fit. Whether or not you can pick it up is another thing.

Good looking pack.
But it looks like it does not feature a hip belt or at least not a frame mounted one.

I think thats crucial to help place the weight on the hips were it belongs not the shoulders.

45lbs is a lot when its rests on your shoulders instead of your hip.
Every day, men who will follow orders to kill you, exercise. Do you?

It does have a hip belt to help transfer the weight. I actually ran mine somewhat loose though. It has no padding. It's just doubled over wax canvas with a leather strap and buckle riveted to it. This pack will never compare to the fancy ultralight packs in comfort. However most of the ultralight packs will never compare in ruggedness and "coolness" in my opinion. You will suffer some with an old style pack like this. It's just the nature of the beast. I'm okay with it.

If my out of shape butt can pass up guys with their ultralight setups, anyone can. It's just a mindset. A little pain never killed anyone. You are not IN pain, you ARE pain, until you're not.

30 couple years ago I had an ortho surgeon tell me that pain is weakness leaving the body.  And he meant it.  He spent his residency at a field hospital in Viet Nam and a year or 2 after that.  I used little morphine for the femur fracture and hip fracture dislocation along with the 90 degree ankle dislocation.  Called me 45% disabled in the legs after that.

What impressed me about that surgeon is he was head surgeon on a guy I pulled out of a car accident.  That guy had a split off 2x4 going in through his left shoulder and deltoid muscle and coming out just below his right kidney.

We had to cut the board off on both ends to get him out of his car.  That guy was out of the hospital in a couple weeks in about 90% normal condition.  He has some more healing and therapy to do but was not far from done.

Ever since then I keep the attitude that what he told me is accurate.

The simple way to think that is below.

God bless you Nemo. IMO, pain is a reminder that we are alive.

Ken, ya' crazy man! LOL...Me I am an old backpacker and nothing is better than those old Kelty aluminum frame backpack skeloton with a nylon pack over 'em. When I was young I always strived for a 25# or less backpack and used a hip belt. You youngsters are a lot stronger than I was/am.  ;)

Yeah a 25lb pack would be comfortable for sure. I guess I just don't care about the "suck" factor much anymore. Something has changed in me the last couple years. I attribute it to getting older and to my studying of Stoicism and Meditation Philosophy. Equanimity is the way to be. We can try to be bad asses all day but if we're just trying to force it, the act will inevitably be exposed.
