Title: Beginner Prep
Post by: militaryman84 on September 12, 2011, 04:13:22 PM
Since retiring three years ago the only thing I have stockpiled is guns and ammo. I thought I would try a garden this year but it didn't turn out well. I didn't account for how short a growing season we have. I will have to research better what veggies to plant in this climate. I have my own well and heat with wood so I don't have to worry there. I don't really care if I lose electricity I guess so I haven't bothered with solar or anything. Game is beyond plentiful so not worried there. What other things should I consider? Ive got my defense wired pretty tight and a couple fall back positions so not worried there. Thanks guys.

medical supplies.

and even if you've got plenty game animals and a good garden, I'd still set back as much shelf stable food as you can afford.

Ive thought about stockpiling food. I have a small amount but not sure if I want to commit to it full on. I figure even as isolated as I am out here I will be overrun at some point and have to go to ground.

Thanks for checking out our site and contributing!  Even $50- $100 worth of canned goods is a nice back up food supply.  And the best part?  When you are having steak you can beg the old lady to dip into your canned beans so you don't have to drive to the store!   Thanks again for joining us.

Think about the idems that you use everyday...

Foot powder
Toothpaste
Toothbrushes
Asswipe
Soap

The way that I prep is that I just by two of anything I need and I put one away.

Hey bro. I would suggest to a begining preppers food stocks, Beans and rice, add to this cans of green chillies and you will have your self meals that will meet the vast majority of your nutritional and caloric needs. And i mean go freaking big man. a one year supply of beans and rice is an excelent base to build food preps around. and with a good vacume sealer you can portion out travel rations that are simple to prepare in the field. Just my .02 cents bro i have about 6 months of rice and i am almost at 6 months with beans. but i have alot of other goodies as well. keep at it man it sounds like youve already handled one of the most expensive portions of prepping. so i would say your off to a good start. You mentioned a short growing season so I'm not sure what zone your in.
I put in some raspberry and blackberry bushes in this year. Once they're established they're low maintanance. Nexy year I'll put in some blueberry bushes. Last year I planted two apples trees and two cherry trees. It doesn't sound like much but they do better than
growing vegetables. Food is food.

Some freeze dried Mountain House #10 cans go along way for one person. Any food you stock is better than nothing.

Wow Larry.  It sounds like you have the start of a nice orchard going there.  How long does it take before you seeing the "fruits" of your work?  I'd like to be able to do that.  Maybe add some sort of nut tree.

Thanks for the info. I actually have a huge wild raspberry patch growing on my land. I am in far northern Minnesota. Nothing between me and the border but forest. Apple tree would be good.

I will looking in to some bulk rice for sure. Buying the land my place is on was the most expensive but luckily I pretty much had nothing to spend my money on for my whole career so I had a great down payment. (http://www.smileyvault.co

BWB,

The quickest, cheapest and easiest items to prep are going to be hard goods stored in 5 gallon buckets/Mylar bags w/oxygen absorbers.

If you hit the local restaurant supply house you can buy 50lbs sacks of beans, rice and wheat for next to nothing compaired to the local super market's rate.

Try not to buy too much romen.. it doesn't last. Remember to pull those resources. The LDS is a wealth of info.

Oh and another thing too.....

If you are using this method with the mylar bags, then you don't need food grade buckets.  Your orange Home Depot buckets will work just fine since you have the mylar.  (You can get a bucket and orange lid from them for like $3-4)

If you are not using the mylar bags, then you need to use food grade buckets and a good lid like Gamma Seals.
