Title: #00 buck load
Post by: Kentactic on March 10, 2013, 03:23:45 PM
So i finally cast some pellets and loaded some #00 rounds. I shot it earlier today and holy crap that shit was amazing. Patterned at 25 yards around 20'' nice evenly spaced pattern out of my 18.5'' cylinder bore. Not too tight that your ruining a shotguns purpose, but tight enough that you can still get a decent range out of it. The recoil was very mild (not that heavy recoil is a big deal). The powder i used was slow burning so it really pushes the pellets out rather then slams. This greatly helps the pellets stay in a nice round shape with minimal deforming. So below is the load info if anyones interested. Use at your own risk. But it is a load directly out of a book. Only things i changed was the wad to a tad taller one to suit my higher powder capacity Hull.

26.0 Grains of Herco (#33 powder bushing for MEC)
Federal 209A Primer
Claybuster 12SO wad
(9) .33 Lead Pellets (i added some tin solder to harden them a bit)
Federal 16mm 2.75'' Clear Hull
8 Star crimp
Velocity 1,250 Ft/s

Ken. I have never reloaded buckshot. Did you manually drop the shot in or does your reloader pour the shot? What reloader are you using? I have a Mec 600 jr. that I have reloaded bird shot with since I was 17 or so.

Im using a MEC Sizemaster. With buckshot you have to manually fill the shells with yours fingers. #00 which is .33 caliber is actually a tad larger then the hulls diameter when you put three in a circle inside the wad so you have to press them in a bit. Its 3 stacks of 3 in alternating directions.

Thats sweet Kentatic with buckshot in high demand this is a really awesome idea. Now this might sound dumb but where do you get the shells? I've never reloaded and I'm thinking about it.

I get my components online. Ballisticproducts.com has some components in-stock. You just have to troll around and see if you bump into stuff in stock. The hardest thing to find is the lead pellets. I searched for a while before i gave up and now have the mold to make my own. But even just getting your hands on the lead in any form isnt easy.

It might be worth a trip to the old unapproved county shooting range's backstop with a sifter and a shovel..

RS, I wouldn't use lead from the back stop of your local range. You really need pure lead for MLers.

Your local gas stations are a good place to get for free or pay a minimal price for wheel weights. These are not pure lead either but I use them for SWC bullets for my 45 ACP.
